Philips Cemetery

AKA Craig Swamp Cemetery
Jacksonville, Duval County, Florida, USA
Directions: The cemetery is located on the southside of Jacksonville. After crossing the St Johns River, take US #1 or Philips Highway south. Next take St Augustine Road, cross the railroad tracks and the cemetery will be on the left at Lorimer Avenue. It is between Philips Highway and Emerson Street. Parking is limited.

This cemetery has an historical marker erected by City of Jacksonville, Florida. This is the text which appears on the marker:

Dating back to the 1840's, the Philips-Craig Swamp Cemetery was a community burial ground for the old Philips settlement originally located along both sides of Old Kings Road (St. Augustine Road). Later erased by twentieth century subdivisions, this rural 19th century community was named after Albert Gallatin Philips, owner of nearby Red Bank Plantation. By 1844 Albert Gallatin Philips and his wife, Martha Anne Hendricks, daughter of pioneer settler, Isaac Hendricks, donated this property for a Methodist Church, school, and cemetery. Many of South Jacksonville's early pioneer families are buried in the cemetary along with graves of both Union and Confederate veterans. Since 1971 the Philips-Craig Swamp Cemetery has been owned and maintained by the Southern Genealogist's Exchange Society, which has documented 135 marked graves.

This cemetery was originally part of a land grant made to William Hendricks in 1797, passed down to his son, Isaac, then later inherited by his daughter Martha Ann Hendricks. She married Albert Gallatin Philips, Sheriff of Duval County 1833-1838. Prior to 1844 the gave this land for a Methodist Church, a school, and a cemetery. It is believed to have been the first Methodist Church in the Jacksonville area on the south bank of the St John's River. After the Civil War, the church, being in need of repair, discontinued services, but the cemetery remained a free community cemetery. Many of the old markers were made of cedar.

Philips Cemetery is also known as Craig Swamp Cemetery Cemetery. It is purported to be a burial place predominantly for African Americans.
