Information

Landon Carter Jr. received a tract of land as part of his father's estate.[1] It became the plantation known as Pittsylvania.[2] The Pittsylvania plantation was located in Prince William Co, Virginia, at the site of the historic Manassas Battlefield Park. A footprint of the main house can be seen on the grounds. [3] When Landon Carter, Jr. died, he left his property in Prince William County to his son Wormley Carter, his lands in Loudon County to his son John F. Carter, [4] See also the Battlefield Park website, and especially the section on James Robinson, a freed slave thought to be the son of Landon -- which Landon is not clear[5] This site can also be seen on the grounds of the Battlefield Park. He also left his lands in Fauquier County to his younger sons, Moore Fauntleroy Carter and Charles Landon Carter. However, when it came time to divide Moore's property amongst his seven children, part of it was found to the east of battlefield park site bounded on the east by Stone Road. This section was assigned to Moore Fauntleroy, Jr. in 1820. In 1861, he realized that the Yankees would be marching over his property, so he took his young family west to Linden and waited out the war there.

Pittsylvania was willed from Wormeley Carter to his son, Landon Carter.[6]

Landon Carter Jr.

Landon Carter Jr. owned the Pittsylvania from 1779 to his death in 1801.

In 1782 the enslaved of Landon Carter Jr. and his son John Carter are seen on the tax list in Prince William Co, VA.[7]

Hi Sandi, Sorry about that. Sure you can edit it. Thanks

Thanks. By the way, John Carter of Sudley's property is adjacent to Landon's Pittsylvania. They were officially bequeathed the property at the same time, with the death of their father Landon, Sr. Since Landon's brother John Fitzhugh Carter, winds up with the same initials as Landon's son, John Fauntleroy Carter, this might prove to be a source of confusion.

Hi - I came here to see if you already had all the enslaved people named in Landon, Jr.'s will. You do. May I ask a favor May I just go edit Wormeley's name? The Warmeley spelling is disconcerting. I would just go do it, but I thought there might be a reason not to. Thanks.
