About the Project

... a Plimmer name meaning may be 'feather collector'

The Plimmer Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Plimmer name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Plimmer name.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Plimmer's), by time period (18th Century Plimmer's), or by topic (Plimmer DNA, Plimmer Occupations, Plimmer Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

Also see the related surnames and surname variants.

Introduction

... feathers for arrows

Here are some of the current research pages included in the study. I'll be working on them, and could use your help!

Note - this is a new page started in 2024 so it is a work in progress

This is the author's personal starting point of this study - David Moss's great grandmother Mary Jane ('Polly' Plimmer) Moss (abt. 1865 - abt. 1928) b. Wrockwardine Wood Shropshire. Her father was from a large family of local miners, etc.

Mary's immediate ancestors can be traced to the same area of Shropshire going back many generations.

Plimmer surname origins

... feather collector
"The name Plimmer is part of the ancient legacy of the Anglo-Saxon tribes of Britain. The name was taken on by someone who worked as a seller of plumes and feathers. The surname Plimmer was first found in Durham"[1].
plumber
"This unusual and interesting name is a regional (West Midlands) variant form of the more familiar name Plummer, which itself has three possible origins. The first of these is a topographical name for someone who lived near a plum tree. The second possible origin is from an early medieval occupational name for a dealer in feathers. The third source is of Norman origin, and is another occupational name, this time for a lead-worker,"[2]

An example of an early 'Plimmer' is Elizabethe Plimmer d.1564 Shimpling Norfolk [3]

John Plimmer married Rosanna Shakespeare (both bapt. 1803) at St Chad's Shrewsbury in1821. Their son, George Plimmer, was born there in 1837. He married Sarah Hoosan at St Chad's in 1854. Their daughter Elizabeth Plimmer was born in 1868 in Shrewsbury. The Plimmer family moved to Accrington for work ( iron foundries and cotton mills) some time between 1881 and 1891. Elizabeth Plimmer married Albert Charles Coomb in Upton on Severn in 1889, my grandfather George Albert Coomb was born there in 1890. Eventually he joined the family in Accrington, as did his widowed mother, Elizabeth Coomb nee Plimmer. George Albert Coomb married Mary Livesey about 1914/15 and my mother, Mary Coomb was born in 1919. She married Frank McKiernan in 1942 in Accrington and I was born there August 7 1946. I frequently visit my mother's grave in Accrington cemetery which is also the grave of my great grandmother, Elizabeth Coomb nee Plimmer.
