About the Project

The Plimsoll Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Plimsoll name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Plimsoll name.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Plimsolls), by time period (18th Century Plimsolls), or by topic (Plimsoll DNA, Plimsoll Occupations, Plimsoll Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

It was my grandfather, Raymond Plimsoll Mingo, who told me when I was a boy around 1960 about the Plimsoll family history and how we were related to Samuel Plimsoll, the 19th Century campaigner whose efforts led to the introduction of the 'Plimsoll line', an initiative that saved tens of thousands of lives at seas.

Sixty years later, having just read Nicholette Jones's excellent biography of Samuel Plimsoll ('The Plimsoll Sensation'), I decided to investigate the family tree, not least to see if what I had been told was correct. It was! Raymond's grandfather had been a cousin of Samuel Plimsoll - i.e. they shared the same grandfather John Plimsoll (b. 1740) (although we're descended from his first wife Anne and Samuel was descended from his second wife Grace).

(However, another story my grandfather told me about how we were supposedly related to Johann Sebastian Bach through the Bache side of the family would seem to be just a family myth!)

I never met my Gt Uncle Charlie, but my Dad told stories of him from when Dad's family holidayed in Tavistock. We were fascinated as kids to have a relation with the name Plimsoll, a name associated by us with gym shoes.
