In the book "The Heritage of Yadkin County" (Frances Casstevens, Editor) it says that the Chief helped white colonists fight against an unfriendly group of Indians in Edenton,NC. The Tuscarora Indian Wars were fought in that area. South Carolina sent many friendly Indians from various tribes, including about 600 Cherokee, to help fight with the colonists. The book also says that it was not very long after this that he rescued his future wife, Mary Wentworth from a hostile tribe. Couldn't it be possible that he was NOT originally from Virginia, but instead from South Carolina? Later settling in VA? If Elizabeth Pledge was indeed married before and had a child name Junaluska (which is a Cherokee name) it seems that this family had some connection with the Cherokee. I also found a William Micajah Poindexter from Surry Co., NC, and moved to Kentucky (I think the grandson of Thomas) who married Sara (Iniwah?) Gist, daughter of Henry D. Gist (known as Sequoyah). This does not prove anything about our Chief, but it shows that this family had more connections to the Cherokee. Recently someone sent me a message about an entry in an old journal (this is from a SC family) about a woman ( I believe her name was Frances) who was said to be the daughter of a Chief Dunnahoo (spelled differently). I am trying to check out the SC possiblities. Does anyone have a source for the claim that Elizabeth Pledge might have had two children (Junaluska and Thomas Ayers)?
