This page serves as a way to update Poland Project Members and nonmembers who are interested in knowing what we are doing for the Poland Project and how they can help.
2024
Greetings Poland Project members!
As you can tell, we are quite a “hands-off” project and created the teams to be self-regulated/self-guided, given the directions on the Volunteer Task Page. All that we ask is you contribute where or when you can. We realize everyone has lives outside of genealogy and are thankful for any contributions made. The Task Page will ALWAYS be up-to-date with links that can assist your team, so please make sure to bookmark it in your browser.
If you have any questions you can always message any one of us directly, leave a comment on this page or on the Volunteer Task Page. We will continue to add/edit relevant information below. If you have found something you would like to share, we would love to hear from you! See our 2024 G2G post!
Events:
- (ongoing) Saturday Sourcing Sprint, always check the G2G for updates on this event.
You may join ANY challenge team as we do not have our own, please remember to include working on Poland suggestion errors and sourcing. Those links can be found on the Volunteer Task Page. Legacy Heirs would love to have our project members.
Just a reminder that you do not have to be on a specific Poland Project Team in order to get involved in events on Wikitree. There is always so much going on at any one given time. There are weekly challenges that do not require you to be part of a team (individual merit.) We're grateful where ever you can help with the project!
In order to stay "in the know" about events, make sure you are following the right tags (you do so on your own personal profile): announcements, challenges, wikitree_events, wikitree_love. If you are not seeing G2G posts/questions on your Navigation Home Page: scroll toward the bottom and you will see a link stating: “[customize appearance of this page]”.
NEW (1 Dec 2024)
Back in September, a small group of us pleaded to Wikitree to have an additional parallel category alternative created for our historical categories: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Parallel_Category_Alternatives. We allowed over a month to discuss ideas and concerns with the Wikitree community with the proposal process and it was approved. This potentially can help any project in Wikitree with historical parallels (though it is only an option, not mandatory to use.)
Ales was able to have Editbot change our existing historical parallels to read "historical" on the parallel bar. Any future historical categories (paralleling to our present-day village category system) will need to also include this new language. Please reach out to Skye or Tina if you have any questions.
NEW (30 Oct 2024) If any of you are involved with the DataDoctors or would like some major fixes for the next challenge, please review profiles in the following categories:
- Category: Cieszacin Wielki, Jaroslau
- Category: Kisielów, Jaroslau
- Category: Łapajówka, Jaroslau
- Category: Rożniatów, Jaroslau
- Category: Zarzecze, Jaroslau
- Category: Żurawiczki, Jaroslau
All of the hyperlinks in the profiles no longer work and need to be removed, because the old Polish Archives site suffered a major malware attack (and moved all the files to a new location). These profiles are beautifully sourced, and this is a lot of work for just one person to take on. I know about this event personally because I had the same thing happen to over 7000 profiles in my One Place Study and had to remove all the links. - Skye

One of the largest undertakings we have done is work on building our foundation of village categories! The time spent on categorizing was reduced significantly when Flo created a Wikitree BEE helper for us. We thank him for his dedication to Wikitree and helping so many projects become more efficient!
Why categorize profiles? It can help you connect and collaborate with others who are researching in the same area, check other profiles within your village to see where they are getting their sources, it helps those who transcribe records to keep track of their work, helps multiple people transcribing records within a certain area from creating duplicates, you can check surname variations that may not be picked up by the soundex in Wikitree (and avoid creating duplicates), etc.

As of 1 Dec 2024, we have a total of 16,887 village categories (not including the parallels) in the system. Poland has a little over 43,000 villages total.
A new feature has been added to Wikipedia village pages, click the "tools" drop down menu and you will find if a village category has been created under "Wikitree" (there should be two or more). For example see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dziewoklucz.
When anyone gets a chance, please look at your area of interest or research.Category:Poland_Voivodeships See if we have created a village category for your ancestors (and if not, we probably have not gotten to that area .. you can always message Skye or Tina and we will create the village for you). We would love if you could take a look at the profiles within the village that may not be sourced or connected and see if you can work with them. There are many unsourced profiles that are not in the unsourced category. Any little bit will help!
NEW
New occupation categories have been added for those born in Poland: Category: Poland, Occupations. If you do not see a category on this list, either message Skye or place the profile in the general occupation category and one will be made for you when coordinators conduct maintenence. Keep in mind these categories are for any person who was born in Poland or it's historical territories (not that they need to be Polish or hold their current occupation in Poland.)
We have also worked on creating Polish parallel language for many categories, as there are many Wikitree users who are from Poland:
Kategorie te zostały utworzone w języku polskim (są one odpowiednikami lub odzwierciedleniem kategorii angielskich):
- Category: Polska, Zawody
- Category: Polska Szlachta
- Category: Polska, Zdrowie
- Category: Polska, Znani ludzie
- Category: Polska, Wojskowy
- Category: Polska, Wojny i konflikty
In addition, Category: Poland, Notables category has been expanded to include historical subcategories and some of the new occupation categories are listed there as well. If you are working on a notable profile, please check for any other relevant categories in which to place them. If you would like a category created, please message Skye.
Wikitree Bee Extension and how it can help the Poland Project:
- Village categorization: begin from the English Wikipedia page. (Reminder that it will NOT create the historical Prussian parallel, refer to Space:Categorization_structure_for_Prussia.
- Create profiles directly from Arolsen Archives. (testing in Preview Version)
- Szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl (testing in Preview Version)
- Geneteka (testing in Preview Version)
- Metryki.Genbaza.pl (testing in Preview Version)
We will put together an instructional spacepage to help people understand how to use these tools. Sept 2024
How To Use the Batch Categorization Feature:
If you are one of the many people on Wikitree who has transcribed records and have many profiles attached to one location, please read the following and learn to use the batch feature (Please keep in mind that Tina and Skye have been working on mass categorization since October 2023. Check the finish dates above, as you will need to add categories to profiles created afterwards.):
Open up the Wikitree Plus page to run your search: https://plus.wikitree.com/default.htm
- On the left side of the screen, select "SEARCH".
- "sort by": which ever option works best for you
- "page size": select maximum (otherwise it will default to 10 profiles per page)
- "text": add the name of your village
- "max profiles": enter 5000
Now you see all the profiles attached to the name in your search parameter. You may see other profiles other people have created too. You will see of those that do not have a village category attached (on the right column of the screen).
So now you will see a wonderful feature at the VERY TOP left of this page called "BATCH CATEGORIZE". It should be in a small blue font above the first name that appears.
- Click on this link.
- It will ask you to input the name of the village category, you only need the village and powiat as it will search all the categories within Wikitree. Helpful hint: If the search result is too large or you do not see what you are looking for, add a comma (ex: Konin, ).
- Once you find your category select it. Make sure it is the correct category. If you have just created the category, it will not show in this list for a few days. There is a way to bypass this: enter in the wording after "Category:" so for example, add: Modła, Mława, Mazowieckie, Polska (do not hit enter!), next click on the first box of a profile you see that can use the category. You should see your newly created category in blue. If it is in red, it is not correct. If there aren't many profiles, you don't have to use this method either, just enter it in manually to each profile.
- All profiles below will have a box you can select to add the category.
- You will only want to select maybe 20 profiles at a time, because for each profile you select, it will open into a new page on your computer (or select the amount that will work for your computer).
- You are required to save each profile page. After 30 seconds have passed, Wikitree goes into "autosave" mode. Once it does this, do something like hit the spacebar in the biography to see the "save button" reappear. Then hit save. Close out that profile ... and onto the next.
- You will notice back on Wikitree Plus, that those profiles you have just worked on will be removed from that working list. If you refresh that page, they will all appear again. So make sure you have time to sit and work through all of them (as it can be frustrating).
Just a warning note: remember that Wikitree will lock up your account if you hit the save button too many times within a short period.
Good news! It appears you DO NOT have to enter Polish diacritics when searching for a village via the category widget (ex.: ł, ó, ą, ż, ś, etc.). This does not apply to other languages when the diacritic translates to two letters (ex. ß=ss, Ö=oe).
2023
Poland Project 2023 Accomplishments
- Poland Project revisited guidelines for membership and provided "teams" for those interested in helping.
- The Wikitree IT team worked with the Poland Project to make it easier to create village categories in Poland by using the Wikitree Bee Extension (Mozilla or Chrome browsers.)

Communication
- There are several members who are now on Discord. No one is under obligation to join Discord, but just know that this option is available to you. Otherwise, we communicate to the project members through a Google Group message or by leaving a comment on member's pages (for those not in the GG), which essentially leads back to this page.
Wikitree on the Chrome Browser or Mozilla
- Wikitree has many awesome applications that can help you with your experience. If you are using the Chrome or Mozilla browser, please consider looking up the Wikitree Browser Extension. There are also other extensions out there (such as Wikitree Bee for categories and citing sources). The Browser Extension allows you to move items around on a Wikitree profile page and also add more links. It’s nice to see “your relationship to the profile” at the top of the page, as well as moving categories to the top of the page, etc. There are many tutorials on youtube to help you.
Poland Project Links
The Poland Project has MANY links that they use around Wikitree for profiles. You may not be familiar with everything that is available. We advise to bookmark the following link: Poland Project. This link is like the middle point for many different directions within the Project.
- The Poland, Maintenance Categories is used quite often to locate profiles which need work (either researched, moved, sourced, needs a category, etc).
- Poland, Health is a high level category that contains the three subcategories; Poland, Stillbirth, Poland, Infant Mortality & Poland, Child Mortality. These three subcategories are part of Wikitree’s Global project Remember the Children. The goal of this project is to help improve the profiles of children who died before their 18th birthday (or legal age in their location). Each subcategory contains the guidelines for the category. Feel free to add the appropriate subcategory to your profiles.
