Working On

  • Oct 2024,https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Polish_Roots, moved to maintenence. Category has been detached from the sticker. The profiles remaining are privatized and do not have the {{ Polish Roots Sticker }}, they have "Polish Roots" category or {{ Polish Roots }} Sticker. Messaged everyone in that category to make changes.
  • 30 Nov 2024, will work on messaging the remaining profile managers in the Polish Roots category. Skye
  • 30 Nov 2024, working on finding templates to support additional stickers for military, war, victims, etc. Skye

To Do

  • We need to update our "Update Page" and send out a message to members sometime in December alerting them to view it, etc.
  • We need to create a Wikitree Bee instruction page for all the new tools available.
  • Created Polish Forced Laborers, World War II category. In the future, we need to create profiles for the forced laborers mentioned in this article: The execution of Władysław Skrzypacz Tina, 3 Nov 2023

Notes

  • https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Parallel_Category_Alternatives 22 Nov 2024, Ales has set Editbot to change (de) to (Historical) under Poland. I asked him to also change (ru) under Congress Poland, check later to see if it has been done.
    • Update that these changes are done. Skye manually changed the few in Congress Poland.
    • Note that when you add the historical category it needs to be aka|xyz|HIST and will appear as "Historical" in the parallel once processed.

Category: Prussia, Needs Profiles Created which potentially have profiles that belong in Poland.

  • I haven't messaged anyone because I found this Category: Needs Profiles Created So I don't think we are responsible for doing anything. Tina
  • Re: Category: Need Profiles Created is an old activity that was promoted with Projects especially For connecting an unconnected branch. I am not sure if it's relevant anymore. Something I will ask about in the near future.

(In regards to Project Protection on nobility) https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Piast-117 In response to "Project Protection" with other managers on nobility profiles: It's OKAY for the managers to remain on Polish nobilty profiles. They were the original "stewards" of these old profiles (from the now defunct EURO ARISTO project) and "protected" these profiles, in a sense. The aim of the Project Protection is so they do not go astray or experience an incorrectly major LNAB.

Pre-1500-profiles and Wikitree+:

  • I messaged Aleš and we can use the following search terms for pre-1500 Polish profiles:
    • location=poland 15cen
    • location=polska 15cen
    • change the cen to the century you need, 14, 13, 12, etc.
    • search for more than one century by adding the "or" operator between search terms, example: location=poland 15cen or location=poland 14cen (up to 5 "or" operators can be used at one time)
    • Since both Poland and Polska are being used in for these profile's location fields, we may want to consider standardizing the location names for pre-1500 profiles to the appropriate location name for the time period. (Tina)

Reports

Tina and Skye agreed that IF you do not create a parallel in Southern Poland (then Galicia), or historical Prussia/Poland DO NOT provide the "aka" description in the CIB. For instance, if you only create categories in Prussia and not in present day Poland, DO NOT provide the aka info in the Prussian CIB. We will periodically run a report of any category in a specific province/voivodeship that has a blank aka. This is how we know a parallel category needs to be set up. (Congress Poland excluded as there should be only few parallels for the Holocaust Project.) Once the parallel category has been set up, we will fill in the aka.

Is there any intention to continue testing the parallel categories ( https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Parallel_Category_Alternatives )?

It worked when I added the Historical parallel to https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Meseritz%2C_Meseritz%2C_Posen . If there in no more testing required, is the goal to change all the Prussian village categories, or where it is most useful?

Best regards, Steve.

Hi Steve! Ales will set editbot to change everything automatically (it's just a matter of reminding him because he tends to get super busy with other things). If any new categories are made, yes absolutely use the new parallel. :)

ETA: the last time I checked he had to change a few things in the template and then also wait for data dump.

Margaret,

It's been removed.

This project might extend to Congress Poland.

I have started to create immigration categories into Governorates in the Russian Empire

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Migrants_from_Kingdom_of_Hanover_to_Saint_Petersburg_Governorate

posted by Steve Thomas
I knew it would Steve. You are awesome to take that on! Grodno and Suwałki Governorates both extend outside of Poland into (I think) present Belarus, Lithuania & Russia/Kaliningrad. I have no idea where they stop or end in those countries as I will not create overlay maps for them or what resources are available.

I hope people understand how difficult it is to chart Russian Empire. The historical maps are in Russian. I can only read a little Cyrillic from my work on Galicia with Ukrainian things ... so I could still identify place names. It's very complicated and not everyone can or will spend the time on it. There is no quick learn for it.  :)

No worries. I have noted how different the boundaries for Congress Poland were between 1830 and 1890.

Just a quick note.

Another Project Coordinator in Germany Project has ancestors from Congress Poland. The suggestion has been made to present some summary of the Poland migration category structure in G2G. I think all the different pieces are already clear in the existing categories and pages.

I will draft a proposal for your consideration in the next few days. The aim will be to place a summary overview in G2G.

Any questions or concerns?

I don't think you need to draft for "approval" necessarily because yes, the structure is already correct. I think it is because people are unfamiliar with the border changes. They probably are looking more for education on understanding when to use the Governorates v. our present day structure in Poland. You and I both know there is no quick way to educate on Congress Poland, we both are learning from spending time in it. I added as much as I could on the Poland Project page and library (included overlay maps and gazetteers.) Also, I am adding the village name on the category. If you find a village and it is missing the historical name, let me know (there are a few missing as Tina and I are testing out a program to create categories for Florian). I'll go back over all the villages in the voivodeship I'm working on when it's done to make sure the information is complete.

Just remember, we compare 1900 to present day. Period, end of story. So the 1900 is the time period after the partition until WWI. Present day satisfies any point in history. So it's a question of if the person was from Russia/Prussia/Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria OR Poland.

Also, I am going out of town next Wed and will be gone/away from Wikitree for 2 weeks.  :)

posted by Skye Sonczalla
Thanks. The structure is clear enough.

I sometimes make blunders while writing English - hence my warning I will write a draft for review. If you are out of town then I only ask for a quick review before posting on G2G.

I am fixated on the year 1900. Both England and Ireland projects also use that era for location categories.

Steve, it makes sense to me! I asked team to remove last of individual profiles from top-level category that I couldn't remove myself. Your work will not only help Poland but Slavic and Jewish projects. Thank you.

Speaking of Jewish Projects: I've been adding quite a few Jewish Cemeteries in Poland recently. Do you want to find out if they would like for me to add some kind of category to them, so they are more easily found within their project? (For example: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Cmentarz_%C5%BBydowski%2C_Warszawa%2C_Mazowieckie) So far the few I have added have the same name of "Cmentarz Żydowski" = Jewish Cemetery. The added category could be something as simple as "Cemeteries, Jewish Cemeteries in Poland". OR do they have some sort of maintenence category? Like when there are new categories added for Poland (that originate elsewhere), Margaret typically places them in one of our maintenence categories so we will finish/finalize it. (That may be a better option, because then they will see the category has been created and may work to find more profiles to add to it.)

Skye, I would reach out to Elaine (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Weatherall-96). She's the leader of Jewish Roots and Holocaust project. Double check with the Cemetery Project - Steve , (Harris-5439)and Natalie or Margaret at the Categorization (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Gale-2455) . Thanks Magggie
