Suffolk's Poor Law Unions

The 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act
established a Poor Law Commission to oversee the national operation of the system. This included the forming together of small parishes into Poor Law Unions and the building of workhouses in each union for the giving of poor relief.
Although, through the years, there were some reorganization of the union bounderies with some unions being dissolved and merged, The majority of the unions set up by the 1834 Act continued to operate for almost a century.
The end of the poor law unions came at midnight on March 31, 1930.
A new Local Government Bill shifted the responsibility of the poor to new local public assistance committees.
