John Cecil (Cissell), 1639-1698

From Paul Tobler: Property that John Cecil owned was called "Cadloe", "Longneck", "White Acres", "Poplar Neck"

  • Cadloe he had originally obtained 100 acres upon arrival.
  • Longneck of 100 acres was added.
  • White Acres of 150 acres was added.
  • Poplar Neck of 200 acres was added.

Therefore he had a minimum of 550 acres of property. The home place was on "Poplar Neck" where they lived with the residence there. [4]

1707 Co-owner of Poplar Neck

In the 1707 Rent Rolls Mary Shercliffe owned 25 acres of "Poplar Neck" along with the sons of John Cissell. [5]

It is unclear how Mary Dant ended up owning 50 acres of Poplar Neck in 1707, the other 150 acres of which were owned in 1707 by William, Thomas, and James Cissell. Mary Dant must have been Mary Shirtcliffe Mills Dant, because her son William owned both Poplar Neck and Annstruther, which had been surveyed for Peter Mills in 1667, in 1714 when he wrote his will leaving the property to his cousins.

1720

  • Mr. Peter Mills owned 109 acres of Poplar Neck in St. Mary's County in 1720. [6]

1714 Will of William Dant, Planter

William Dant, planter, of St. Mary's County, in his will (31 Jan 1714-16 May 1715) conveys 76 acres of Poplar Neck to his cousins Jno. Dant and Wm. Mills and their heirs. Should Jno. Dant die without issue, then to Jno. Mills and his heirs. William Dant also named his "brother" Peter Mills executor, and Peter Mills, Jr and his cousin Elinor Nevet, to receive personalty. [7] Linda Reno presumes William Dant was a son of Thomas Dant and Mary Shercliffe.
