I do sometimes wonder about a connection to the similar name...Pultney and Pulteney, purely because of the similarity to some spellings found during research...namely Poultney. Wealth is enough of an excuse to close ranks and refuse to name family members so as not to share the wealth.
The Pulteney family can be found in Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Warwickshire and Lancashire. Warwickshire being in close proximitry to Staffordshire. Referenced in Collin's Peerage of England.
