If you have any comments or questions, please post a comment here on this page, in G2G (with the tag Irish_Roots and Medieval) or send me a private message. Thanks!
Background
In the past many Irish profiles where imported via gedcom's and had little sourcing or biographies and lots of duplicate profiles. Thanks to the very hard work of many early workers on these profiles, almost all of the duplicate profiles are reduced to one profile, a basic bio written and at least one source was added. To help develop the quality of these profiles, a pre-1500 Badge was created and only people with this Badge could edit those profiles.
Sources
A list of links to current Pre-1500 sources can be found at Historical Sources of Ireland.
There are three types of sources. Annals, Genealogies and other.
Annals - These books were written about important events and listed by date. Because they where written during the time of the event or copied from another book written during the time of the event, they can be considered primary sources. If you are starting a new family line, the Annals may not be a good starting point. The names of ancestors and decedents can easily be mixed up with others of the same name. NOTE: Most births are not listed in the annals,
Genealogies - Due to the abondance of written material, Ireland is probably the most studied culture in western Europe. Between 1500 and 1950, numerous books were produced with genealogical tables and are still referenced today because they can identify a person by number and list a male line back to historic times. An example of this is John O'Hart's, Irish Pedigrees Or The Origin and Stem of the Irish Nation. The problem with most of these books is they didn't list sources, dates, wives or siblings.
Probably the most used by historians, genealogists, and DNA annalists is Bart Jaski's Genealogical tables of medieval Irish royal dynasties, It lists the early Irish Kingship Successions, with most dates, kingdoms, and clanns.
Other
Sources like Darryl Lundy's the Peerage, Wikipedia, Clann Pages and other online pages, should normally be listed under Also See - Although not a primary source, these pages can give you links to primary sources and give you ideas for the text portion of the biography.
Anglo-Irish. Anglo-Saxon and Scotch-Irish - If you are researching any of these Nobles and can't find enough Irish primary sources, you should check Pre-1500 Resource Page for more sources.
NORSE KINGS of Ireland - Space:Historical_Sources_of_Ireland#Viking and FMG-MidLands is a starting point
