About Project Dashboards

Project Dashboards have been created in an effort to assist Projects with tracking, comparing, and charting data and metrics that are valuable to their project.

Much of this data is all readily available on WikiTree; however, in most cases there is no way to see historical data or produce charts except through manual extraction and manipulation of the data. For example, to see the growth in membership of a project, you can view the project's badge feed (e.g., Canada). At the top of the listing, the feed shows the total members who have the badge, and under each member's entry you can see the data that the badge was awarded to them. In order to view the growth over time, you would need to manually record the total number of badged members each day.

The Project Dashboard aims to assist in these efforts by automatically recording these values each day, and then offering the data back with the ability to view customized date ranges. While this effort is still in its infancy, it is the hopes that project availability will expand and that new data metrics will be added at the request of Project Leaders. For a listing of all current data points being tracked, see the Data Points section herein.

Please leave a comment below if you would like to add a dashboard for your project, would like to make suggestions on dashboard display (charts, data comparisons, etc.), or if you have ideas for new data points that can be tracked.

How it is Done

Data for each project is automatically captured on individual Project-oriented Google Sheets maintained by Steve Harris. Each of these spreadsheets employ a series of formulas and Google App Script functions which retrieve data from publicly available pages on WikiTree and WikiTree+. This data is refreshed, captured, and stored daily into date-specific rows. Once the spreadsheet is setup for a project, there is little to no maintenance required - the spreadsheet will automatically work in the background to collect the data for you.
Data is retrieved and stored every day between 05:00:00-06:00:00 UTC.
Using Data Studio, each Project is given a specific page through which their data is connected and where various visual elements (i.e., scorecards, line charts, bar charts, etc.) can be displayed.

Using the Dashboard

Date Range Display

The default date range for each project dashboard is "This Week To Date (Starts Sunday)".
If you click on the date range field located at the top of the report (looks like a dropdown list), you can choose from predefined dates using the dropdown field at the top of the calendar. Alternatively, you can choose a custom date range using the built in calendar.

Data Comparisons

As data is accumulated over time, it becomes easier to provide data comparisons. Most of the data elements on dashboards are set to "previous period". Previous Period compares the currently selected date range for the report to the previous matching period. For example, if the current period is set to the week of 11 Apr 2022 - 15 Apr 2022, the comparison is to the previous week, 4 Apr 2022 - 8 Apr 2022.
On scorecards, these comparisons are represented as either a percentage or numerical value change. On charts, these comparisons are typically shown as muted (lower visibility) data points and lines.
Charts are also interactive, so hovering over the data points in a chart will give you a popup box showing the specific values.

Data Points

Standard Data

The following data is being extracted from DD ProjectState Lists:
  • Managed Profiles - Count of profiles for which the project is Manager.
  • Trusted List - Count of Profiles for which the project is on the Trusted List.
  • ProjectState Suggestions - Count of all profiles represented in line numbers 3, 4, 5, 7, 11, 12, 13, 15. Line numbers are explained here.
The following data is being extracted from WikiTree+ queries:
  • Project-specific Data
    • Project Box Usage - Count of profiles using the project's project box.
    • Project Managed Suggestions - Count of active suggestions for all Project Managed Profiles.
    • Unsourced Project Managed Profiles - Unsourced Profiles managed by the Project.
    • Unlinked Project Managed Profiles - Unlinked Profiles managed by the Project.
    • Unconnected Project Managed Profiles - Unconnected Profiles managed by the Project.
  • Location-specific Data
    • Unsourced <location> Profiles - Unsourced Profiles in the Project's country of interest.
    • Unlinked <location> Profiles - Unlinked Profiles in the Project's country of interest.
    • Unconnected <location> Profiles - Unconnected Profiles in the Project's country of interest.
    • Category:<location>, Unsourced Profiles - Count of profiles in the category (e.g., Category:Scotland, Unsourced Profiles).
    • Location=<location>, CategoryFull=Unsourced Profiles - Count of Profiles in Category:Unsourced Profiles that have at least one <location> in Birth or Death Location fields.
The following data is pulled live from WikiTree pages:
  • Project Members - Count of Project Members based on the badge listing

Custom Data

If your project is tracking data via a Google Spreadsheet, JSON, CSV, XML or another format, this can be connected to your dashboard and displayed back in charts. Please contact Steve directly for connecting to your custom data.

Possible Enhancements

  • Linking to the specific pages where data is retrieved. For example, clicking on "Project Box Usage" would take you to a page that lists all profiles using the project box. This could be through the "What Links Here" feature of Template pages (example) or through a WikiTree+ query (example)?
  • Look at enabling the 'Optional Metrics' header for each chart that displays multiple data points. This lets a user change which columns or fields they want to see in the chart without having to edit the chart configuration. As an example, the Managed Profiles chart shows both Managed and Trusted numbers. By selecting the Optional Metrics option, and then deselecting the Trusted data point, a user could remove the Trusted numbers from the chart and only display the Managed numbers.
  • Investigate if Analytics data can be linked to relevant projects:
    • Realtime > Locations
    • Audience > Geo > Location
    • Audience > Geo > Language
  • Investigate if Search Console data can be linked to relevant projects:
    • Performance > Search Results > Countries
