Category Structure Proposal

This is an initial page for a Cameroon sub-Project of the African and Global Projects. It is proposed that the initial Categories for Cameroon are location based, like Scotland and England, using the modern administrative structure of the 10 Regions/Provinces, then below that the 58 DivIsions/Départements and the 10 capital cities/towns of the Regions.

Propose that the 10 Regions have infoboxes as there are separate Wikipedia articles, in English and French, for each Region, and they have been reasonably well defined and stable since Independence. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regions_of_Cameroon?wprov=sfti1

Regional Capital Cities

Propose to create all ten, assigned to their respective regions. Alternatively, each regional capital could sit directly below Cameroon, until theCameroon category page becomes too crowded or populous.

Divisions/Départements

Propose to only create as required. Example:

[[Category:Manyu_Division, Southwest_Region]]

[[Category:Wouri, Littoral_Region]]

If towns/villages required:

[[Category:Besongabang, Manyu_Division]]

Issues:

1. Propose that there is no need to indicate chief town in a Division level category.

2. Cameroon/Cameroun is officially a bi-lingual country, so how to handle the English/French names for Divisions/Départements and Regions/Régions? (And the Project pages too!)

3. Should words like ‘Région' be part of the category name. Generally, British counties are “xxxshire” So an explicit naming not needed.(Except for County Durham!) This distinction between régions/divisions/préfectures/arrondissements not evident for Cameroonian names.

3. How to handle the temporal changes, when 1858-1916 Cameroon was Kamerun or Neukamerun?, Or when Regions were Provinces prior to 2008?

4. How to handle pre-1858, when Cameroon was a multiplicity of Kingdoms/Fondoms/Emirates/Caliphate? Might be useful for well established historical figures like Emirs or the Fons of Bafut.

5. Possible evolutionary directions that profile managers might want:

Languages - a rather special feature of Cameroon. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Languages_of_Cameroon?wprov=sfti1
Categories for English/French/Fulani/German/Pidgin probably not a good idea, as too big, but there is probably merit in allowing the other hundreds of languages. For example: Kenyang spoken by the Bayangi people near Mamfe in Manyu Division of South-west Region/Province, though languages cut across administrative areas.
Religions, especially as the Baptist/Catholic/Protestant churches all competed with providing education, especially secondary schools.
Other existing Category structures, like professions, should be fine.
