This Page is a Working Page for the Irish Roots Category Planning Team

Irish Roots will be making a transition to Ireland Project.

We are starting with the basic top-level structure for all Non-Location Categories as outlined below:

  • Ireland - Top Level Categories Managed By Other Projects
    • Ireland, Cemeteries (Global Cemeteries Project)
    • Ireland, Child Mortality (Categorization Project for now)
    • Ireland, Infant Mortality (Categorization Project for now)
    • Ireland, Religious Institutions (Categorization Project for now)
    • Ireland, Unsourced Profiles (is managed by the Profile Improvement Project. This is also listed under Irish Roots Project Maintenance Categories. Therefore: we need to find out if our project is responsible or if they are. If they are, it should NOT be placed with the rest of the maintenance categories)
    • Emigrants from Ireland (Categorization Project)
    • Ireland, Name Studies (One Name Study Project)
    • Ireland, Place Studies (One Place Studies Project)
    • Irish Convicts to Australia (Australia Project)
    • Irish Military History (Military and War Project)
    • Irish Notables (Notables Project)
    • Irish Quakers (Quaker Project)
  • Ireland - Top Level Categories Managed by the Ireland/Irish Roots Project
    • Irish Roots Project (This category is to be used for all Project related subcategories and related space pages, as well as badge-holder profiles for the Project)
    • Ireland, Castles and Historic Houses (new category in line with England and Scotland Projects)
    • Ireland, Educational Establishments (new category)
    • Ireland, Genealogy Resources
      • Ireland Censuses
      • Irish Emigration
    • Ireland, History (currently named Irish History)
      • Irish Rebellions
        • Easter Rising
        • First Desmond Rebellion
        • Irish Rebellion of 1798
        • Irish Rebels
        • List of Irish Uprisings (Irish Roots - transfer to space page with links to existing subcategories instead of having sub-categories and delete the category. All subcategories should be under Irish Rebellions)
        • List of Wars in Ireland (Military and War Project - should be a space page)
        • Nine Years' War (Ireland)
        • Second Desmond Rebellion
        • Tithe War 1931-1836
    • Ireland, Organizations
      • Dublin Philosophical Society
      • Hellfire Club
      • Irish Patriot Party
      • Orange Order

People could add to it, I couldn't re-locate some of the better videos when updating it just now.

Personally, I found it really helpful and we can make that a Team responsibility, if you'll agree. It would then be linked to the main category page for the Irish History branch.

Videos Irish History (Transfer to Space Page, delete category) I think this could be deleted altogether, it was just something I did for interest at the beginning of the Irish Project & it really isn't practical to keep appropriate links up-to-date.

Another option for Dalcassians and others, would be to include them under an Irish Genealogy branch, that would be found under the main Irish Roots category. We can look at that then.

As for ensuring Gaelic names are represented, I think they could be placed on the category page itself. With a statement something like: In Gaelic, it is known as An Gorta Mor. I'm all for including Gaelic whenever possible.

Rich, I've added a note to Slaves to reflect your view. I agree completely.

You're very welcome.

Let me just try and give you my thought process so you understand where I'm going here: A category structure is like a file cabinet. The parent category = the drawer you put your files in. A sub-category = the section in that drawer or the destination file folder. Profiles = records. Cross-referencing (links) records and folders to other sections where needed. We should only have multiple parent categories when we are linking to other projects or category branches.

Thanks Amy - this is the way I like to work & what I was looking for "Parallel interaction needs to be addressed by linking pages not nesting them under multiple categories." re comment above - I have been an archivist myself & understand.

Irish History, Kingdom of Ui Failghe (drop the (Offaly) part) & Irish History, Kingdom of Deisi Dal gCais (drop the (Dalcassians) part) - How do we cope with alt. languages? Will we rely on Wikipedia to tell people they'll find their Dalcassian ancestors in the Kingdom of the Deisi Dal gCais?

SLAVES The description on the category page is more like a forced indentured servant. True, pre-1200 Ireland had Slaves, St Patrick being one, But I don't think we will find many documented Slaves. My feelings are to keep it simple for now and add to the description "all Types of slaves and time frames". DOB will show a time frame and as interest and profiles in this Category grows, we can revisit this subject.
