Introduction
The Kemptown Methodist Protestant Church, Kemptown, Maryland, was founded in 1836. As the denominations have merged, it has become known, in succession, as the following:
- 1836 Kemptown Methodist Protestant Church
- 1939 Kemptown Methodist Church
- 1968 Kemptown United Methodist Church
The Providence M.P. Church was first organized in 1836 at which time a small tract of land was purchased, part of the original "Snakeroot Thicket" tract from Solomon and Barberry Kemp, and a church was erected. This church became part of the Frederick Circuit, which included Fairview, Mt. Carmel, Providence, Montgomery Chapel, Pleasant Grove, Mountain View, and New Market and remained in the circuit until 1893. [1]
The history of the church is presented at the site for the Maryland Historical Trust [1] which contains a copy of the History of the Providence Methodist Protestant Church. written on July 4, 1976 [2]
1836 Founding Deed
The deed, acknowledged 9 August 1836, transferring the parcel of land specified that the new Church "was to be kept as a Church for the use of Methodist Protestant Ministers or any other white minister of the Gospel who may obtain permission from the Trustees to use the Church when not occupied by Methodist Protestant Ministers or members of the Methodist Protestant Church." - Three of the afore mentioned Trustees were members of Providence Methodist Protestant Church and two were nonmembers. The two non-member Trustees were the representatives of the subscribers."[1]
