Pukerimu Cemetery

NB: Not to be confused with Pukerimu Lawn Cemetery in Paeroa.
Pukerimu is 6 kilometres west of Cambridge. The cemetery is on Kaipaki Road about 4 kilometres east of Kaipaki Primary School. Pukerimu Cemetery enjoys a peaceful rural setting and has a flat site. There is no carpark area, but there is room to pull off the road onto the grass verge to park.

The cemetery is currently open for ashes interment and lawn cemetery burials.

HISTORY of the Cemetery
Land was set aside for a public cemetery in the Kaipaki area, under ‘The Cemeteries Act 1882. It was 5 acres, and on section 12 situated on Kaipaki Road.

The Cemetery was established with the name Pukekura Cemetery, and was administered by locals who formed a Board of Trustees. The first Trustees were John Fisher, James Anderson, Joseph Gane, William Scott and William Sturges. The first burial, recorded 28 October 1903, was Alice Vickers who had died two days earlier, after being thrown from her horse.

The Pukerimu/Kaipaki residents met in 1981 and decided to hand over the administration of the cemetery to the Waipa County Council. The Council was later incorporated into the Waipa District Council, which is the current administrator of the cemetery.

New Zealand Cemeteries Team

This page is maintained by the New Zealand Cemeteries Team, who are part of the Global Cemeteries Project (and the Oceania Cemeteries Team). The aim is is to document the final resting place of those buried in New Zealand, to ensure that each cemetery has its own free-space page, which is linked to the category structure for Global Cemeteries, and that those buried in them are also gathered in the correct category.

  • For a list of Interments in alphabetical and table format please see the attached table page. Note the interments list is currently a work in progress.
  • Currently there are 10 profiles listed on Wikitree for this cemetery, which is well short of the number of interments. Findagrave has 341 entries, and BillionGraves has 74. Irwin-2099 23:16, 27 January 2019 (UTC)

The overall progress of this endeavour will be found on the NZ Cemeteries Team Progress page.
