Rescue Efforts

Six men and a boy who were working in the mine at the time of the explosion were believed to have been killed instantly. Four others died attempting to rescue them.

The mine wasn't a colliery in the conventional sense; it was a drift mine where a tunnel was bored directly into a hillside; in this case a steep river bank.
