Queens County, New York

Queens was one of the original twelve counties created in 1683. It is believed to be named after Catherine, Queen of England & Scotland.

In the 1898, when New York City was formed from the consolidation of five New York counties, the western part of Queens County became the Borough of Queens in New York City. In 1899 the eastern part of Queens County was split off to become Nassau County.

See How Queens Became New York City's Largest Borough for an account of the historical geography of the county and its component parts, including changes to names and boundaries.
