Biography
Maude was born in about 1584 and was baptized on 17 November 1584 in Ditchingham, Norfolk. She was the daughter of John Thurton and Grace Shelton.[1][2][3]
Maude married Christopher Calthorpe, Esq. of Cockthorpe and East Barsham, Norfolk, at Broome, Norfolk on 8 September, 1602.[1][2] They settled in Ditchingham.[3]
Christopher and Maude had the following children:
- James Calthorpe, Esq. (1604-1652)[1][2]
- Col. Christopher Calthorpe (1605-1662),[1][2] baptized on 21 April 1605 at St Mary's, Ditchingham, Norfolk with his father named as Christopher.[4] (some sources give the baptism date as 22 April 1605 - see Christopher's profile)
- Grace Calthorpe (wife of Robert Strutt),[1][2][3] baptised at St Mary's, Ditchingham, Norfolk on 22 January 1606/7 with her father named as Christopher[5]
- Barbara Calthorpe (wife of Henry Mordaunt),[1][2] baptised at Cockthorpe, Norfolk in November 1608 with her father named as Cristofer, armiger[6]
- Matilda Calthorpe,[1][2] baptised at Cockthorpe, Norfolk on 3 January 1613/4 with her father named as Cristofer[7]
- Philip, baptised at Cockthorpe, Norfolk on 1 March 1614/5 with his father named as Cristofer[8] (not listed by Douglas Richardson)
- Robert Calthorpe,[1][2] baptised at St Mary in the Marsh, Norwich, Norfolk on 20 October 1616, died the next day: his parents are named as Maude and Cristofour in the parish register[9]
- Francis Calthorpe,[1][2] baptised at St Mary in the Marsh, Norwich on 10 February 1616/7 with his father named as Christopher[10]
- Oliver Calthorpe,[1][2] baptised at Blakeney, Norfolk on 12 December 1622 with his father named as Christever Calthorpe Esquire[11]
- Edward Calthorpe[1][2]
- Charles Calthorpe[1][2]
Maude's mother Grace died in December 1606. The following month, her father John wrote his will (transcription) and Maude was mentioned numerous times (with the spelling Mawde), with both her husband and sister Elizabeth Thurton, as co-heirs to her father's estate.[3]
Besides Maude and her husband, only children Christopher (spelled "Christofer") and Grace were mentioned in the will. Christopher was bequeathed £200 and Grace 200 Marks of "lawfull englishe money".
By 1616, the Calthorpe family was living in Norwich, Norfolk, where son Robert was born and died a day or two later.[9] Later they moved to Blakeney, Norfolk, where their son Oliver was baptised at in 1622,[11] and their daughter Grace was married in 1624.[12]
Christopher, Maude's husband, died on 14 March 1624,[13] and presumably Maude herself died a few days later, as she was buried on March 27, 1624.[1][2]
