The Railroad Hotel was a pub on Station Road in Burnham-on-Crouch. It replaced the Welcome Sailor Inn in the same neighborhood when "the opening of the railway rendered increased accommodation necessary at Burnham."[1]

Newspaper extracts regarding the opening of the Railway Hotel:

  • 4 Oct 1890: "The Development of Burnham.--Mr. Wood, solicitor, of Rochford, asked on behalf of Messrs. Luker and Co., brewers, for the confirmation of the grant of a provisional licence for the proposed Railway Hotel, Burnham. It was urged that the opening of the railway rendered increased accommodation necessary at Burnham, and Messrs. Luker proposed to close the Welcome Sailor Inn and build a more commodious hotel a few yards off. There was no opposition, and the provisional grant by the Latchingdon bench was confirmed on the understanding that the Welcome Sailor would be closed when the new licence came into force."[1]
  • 30 Jan 1891: "Building Operations—A start has been made with the new Railway Hotel for Messrs. Luker and Co., of Southend, and it is hoped that it will be finished during the coming summer."[2]

Known license transfers:

  • 1 Aug 1891: "BURNHAM.--A transfer of licence from the Old Welcome Sailor to the Railway Hotel, Burnham, was granted to Mr. James T. Minett."[3]
  • May 1892: "The Railway Hotel.--A temporary transfer of the licence of this hotel has been granted by the Latchingdon justices from J. Minett to Alf. Parker."[4][5]
  • 7 Jan 1905: "The licence of the Railway Hotel at Burnham was transferred to Mrs. Parker, widow of Mr. Alfred Parker."[6]
