About the Project
The Rakow Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Rakow name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Rakow name.
As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Rakow's), by time period (18th Century Rakow's), or by topic (Rakow DNA, Rakow Occupations, Rakow Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

Surname Origins
According to the Dictionary of American Family Names the surname Rakow hails originally from East Germany.[1] According to the same book, Rakow is a habitational name, which means it relates to a place, in this case, a German village, near Grimmen, in Süderholz, municipality currently part of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern or Mecklenburg–Western Pomerania, Germany.[2][3] By the same logic one should possibly include Raków, in Poland as well.[4]
Rakow Around the World
Websites such as Forbears and Surnam.es, currently show the United States as the country with the highest incidence of Rakow as a surname followed by Germany and England.[5][6]
