Family history states that Peter Drake Ramsay Sr. was a Scottish sailor who jumped shipped in New Brunswick and hid in a cave to avoid being hanged. The story goes that Peter and a man named Anderson Jumped ship back in 1855. They were asked to go ashore to bring fresh water back for the ships journey home. They never returned. Peter Sr real last name may have been Chisholm. Another possible last name was Hennessy. When Peter came out of hiding, he reportedly took the name Ramsay.

Peter married Anastasia Savoie in 1857. They were married for over 53 years and had 10 children together.
