History

Southeast of the gold mining towns of Grass Valley and Nevada City sits the Red Dog Cemetery. Nearby is the Greenhorn Creek. As we stand at the gate and look in to the cemetery, we are looking east.

Continued unnecessary vandalism of the Red Dog Cemetery has required this sign to be hung on cable across an opening in the fence that once was a gate. The gate had been dismantled by vandals and hauled off by same. Sadly, tombstones have been destroyed or broken.

The Nevada Cemetery District in Nevada County, California is a private authority and is no way connected to the County or the Cities. They operate on barely even a skeleton crew, but care deeply for these old cemeteries. I, for one, appreciate all they do to preserve our historical cemeteries.
