Biography

Mary Catto was likely born about late 1819 to parents Francis Catto and Elspet Marr at Pitmillan, Foveran, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. She was later baptised on the 1st January 1820 at Foveran, Aberdeenshire. [1] [2]

Little information has been found about Mary's early life before marriage.

Mary Catto (about age 20 years) married James Wood on the 13th December 1840 in her birth parish of Foveran, Aberdeenshire. [3] [4]

It is believed that Mary and James had the following children. Their births ranged between the years of 1839 and 1865

Note: Andrew (born in 1857) died in 1858 before the birth of Andrew (born in 1863)

According to the 1841 census (taken at midnight of the 6th June 1841), Mary and husband James, an Agricultural Labourer, both age about 20-24 yrs were living at Cultercullen Farm in the Census District (and Parish) of Foveran, Aberdeenshire. (Note: It was common, for the 1841 Census, that the adult ages were rounded down to nearest 5 yrs). [5] [6]

(note also that - the 1841 census does not show the family relationships of occupiers to the head of the house, So it is a possibility that the Elisa shown as Elisa Catto , 2 yrs old was an illegitimate child of Mary's. (See Research Note: A)

Their son James Wood was likely born about 1842 in the parish of Foveran.[7]

Their daughter Elspet Wood was born on the 6th June and baptised the next day on the 7th June 1843 at the Foveran parish church, Aberdeenshire.[8]

Their daughter Ann Ruxton Wood was born on the 3rd March and later baptised on the 19th March 1845 in the Foveran parish church, Aberdeenshire.[9]

Their daughter Barbara Wood was born on the 3rd March and later baptised on the 22nd March 1848 in the Foveran parish church, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.[10]

Their son John Wood was born on the 6th June and later baptised on the 20th June 1850 in the Foveran parish church, Aberdeenshire.[11]

At sometime in the following 10 month period Mary and her family had moved to the adjoining parish of Udny to the west.

By the time of the 1851 Scotland Census (which was held on the midnight of the 30th March 1851) Mary with her husband James and five of their children were residing at Orchardton Farm in the Census District (and Parish) of Udny in the county of Aberdeenshire.[12] [13]

Their daughter Mary Wood was born on the 5th April 1851 at Belhelvie, Aberdeenshire.[14]

Sometime between, 1852 and 1856, James and Mary Wood moved their family from their Orchardton dwelling in the parish of Udny to their Hill of Kier residence in the adjoining parish of Belhelvie to the south.

Their son Francis Wood was born on the 7th Jun 1855 in Belhelvie, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.[15]

Their son Andrew Wood was born on the 28th April 1857 in Belhelvie, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.[16]
(Note: this Andrew died about a year later in 1858. [17])

Their son George Wood was born on the 18th July 1859 in Belhelvie, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.[18]

By the 1861 Scotland Census (which was held on the midnight of the 7th April 1861) Mary and James were still residing at their residence situated at Hill of Kier within the Census District (and Parish) of Belhelvie, in the County of Aberdeenshire. [19]

Their daughter Elizabeth Wood was born on the 15th May 1861 in Belhelvie, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.[20]

Their son Andrew Wood was born on the 26th February 1863 in Belhelvie, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.[21]

Their daughter Jane Wood was born on the 25th May 1865 in Belhelvie, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.[22]

At the time of the 1871 Scotland Census (midnight of the 2nd April 1871), Mary and her husband James were residing at Hill of Keir Cottage, in the Census District (and Parish) of Belhelvie, Aberdeenshire. Living with them were four of their children - George (a 11 year old Farm servant), Scholars Elizabeth (9yrs), Andrew (8 yrs), and Jane (5 yrs). Staying with Mary and James was their grand daughter Helen Wood, a scholar age 5 years. [23] [24]

Ten years later on the midnight of the 3rd April 1881, Mary (Age 61 yrs) and James Wood (also age 61 years) were recorded as still residing in the Census District of Belhelvie, County of Aberdenshire. They were residing in a dwelling house on West <side?> Hill of Keir. Living with them was their unmarried 21 year old son George and their unmarried 19 year old daughter Elizabeth. Also staying with them was their 10 month old grand-daughter Georgina Fordyce. (It is likely Georgina is Elizabeth's daughter).[25] [26]

Mary's husband James Wood, died in 1883 (age 63 yrs) in Belhelvie District, The death was registered in the registration district/Parish of Belhelvie, Aberdeenshire. [27]

James Wood was buried in the Belhelvie Church Graveyard. The headstone read
In Memory of James Wood Hill of Kier Died 12th February 1883 aged 63yrs -------- [28]

About six years later in 1889, widowed Mary Wood (ms Catto) died, age 70 years. Her death was registered in the registration District (and Parish) of Belhelvie, Aberdeenshire. [29]

Mary Wood was buried in the Belhelvie Church Graveyard beside her husband James. The headstone reads -
In Memory of James Wood , Hill of Kier Died 12th February 1883 aged 63yrs , and his Wife Mary Catto 19th July 1889 aged 70yrs.-----
