About the Project
The Ride Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Ride name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Ride name.
As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Ride's), by time period (18th Century Ride's), or by topic (Ride DNA, Ride Occupations, Ride Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

Early Rydes From the 14th century the history of Ewhurst families and houses can be traced. Personal names recorded in the taxation records such as lay subsidies and the 1380 Poll Tax include many names that can be associated with surviving place names in Ewhurst, for example, Willemus atte Hull, [Hillhouse] Johannes Wekehurst [Wykehurst], Ricardus atte Ruyde (Ryde House now Oldhouse], Henricus Byldener [Bildens], Alicia Coverworth [Coverwood], Walterus Garlond [Garlands], Ricardus Godebrug [Gadbridge] and many others.
During the Tudor period a new social class emerged. Yeomen were prosperous farmers, who owned their own land, but were below the status of gentlemen. The Rydes of Oldhouse were a typical family of yeoman farmers in the parish. At various times different branches of the family were in possession of Bildens, Longhurst Hill, Coxlands and Mapledrakes. Other prominent local families included the Dendys who were associated with Somersbury, Breach, Woolpit and Downhurst; the Knights of Isemongers, High Edser, Bramblehurst and Slythehurst; and the Hills of Hillhouse, Pollingfold and Rumbeams.
Thomas Ryde married Mary Simons and they had six children: Edward Ryde 1578-18 March 1641 (c.Thomas Ryde d.1631, Charles Ryde d.1664, Henry Ryde, Mary Ryde, Marjery Ryde, William Ryde, Abel Ryde, Anne Ryde, Joan Ryde d.1615, Robert Ryde, John Ryde, Edward Ryde), Thomas Ryde 1583-1641 May 1654 WILL (m.Margaret Dendy, widow of Ralph Dendy, c.Beatrice Ryde, Thomas Ryde, Richard Ryde, Anne Ryde, Sarah Ryde), Joan Ryde 1585c-1631c (m.Dendy, c.Thomas Dendy, Edward Dendy, Mary Dendy, Beatrice Dendy, Joan Dendy and Catherine Dendy). Mary Ryde 1590-after 1613, Ann Ryde 1592-1619, John Ryde 1592-1620 (c.Thomas Ryde, Mary Ryde). Thomas Ryde died September 1613, Ewhurst, Surrey. WILL Mary Ryde died February 1620, Ewhurst, Surrey. I see you are listed as the Coordinator of the Ride One Name Study.
I am currently researching the Wride family, who were in East Yorkshire, UK in the early 19th century, many emigrating to the Americas thereafter.
Do you also consider the surname Wride to be in this study? Do you have other study members?
Thank you, Roy
Yes I do research the surname Wride and also Attride, Attryde, and Ryde, I have a couple of trees on Ancestry for Wride, but not worked on them much lately, a family from Somerset another from Yorkshire who went to Canada. No I do not have any other study members at present but would welcome any assistance with information etc.
Thank you
Julie Ryde
I am particularly interested in any information you might have on the Yorkshire family who moved to Canada. Are the trees you have on Ancestry publicly available? I have a full Ancestry subscription.
Your Yorkshire family might be the one I'm working on here on WikiTree. You might want to have a look at the biography and descendants of Thomas (Wryth) Wride (1740-1826). Note Thomas' parents are not those recorded in other researcher's trees. Furthermore, I have research on Thomas' son John that I have not seen on any other tree, on any genealogical site. See John Wride (1779-1849).

I also created redirects for both Project:Ride and Project:Ryde (the links for the button from their respective surname pages - see for example the Ride surname page). The links click through to this page.
