Riversdale, once the manor home and focal point of a 739-acre (2.99 km2) slave plantation, was constructed for Belgian émigré Henri Joseph Stier, Baron de Stier, who resided in the William Paca House in Annapolis, Maryland prior to constructing Riversdale. Stier designed the home in 1801 to mimic the Chateau du Mick, his property in Belgium. Four years later, Stier departed to Belgium, leaving his daughter, Rosalie Eugenia (Stier) Calvert (1778-1821), and her husband, George Calvert (1768-1838), the son of Benedict Swingate Calvert, (who was a natural son of The Fifth Baron Baltimore), to complete Riversdale. Charles Benedict Calvert (1808-1864), the son of Rosalie and George Calvert, founded the Maryland Agricultural College, which is now the University of Maryland, College Park, on a portion of the Riversdale property.
