About the Project

The Rivet Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Rivet name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Rivet name.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (France Rivets), by time period (18th Century Rivets), or by topic (Rivet DNA, Rivet Occupations, Rivet Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

How to Join

To join the Rivet Name Study, first start out by browsing our current research pages to see if there is a specific study ongoing that fits your interests. If so, feel free to add your name to the Membership list below, post an introduction comment on the specific team page, and then dive right in!

Task List

Following are general tasks related to this project:

• Find sources to document currently unsourced Rivet profiles.
• Consider adopting one of the orphaned Rivet, Rivett, or Rivette profiles. Many of them could use a bit of TLC (tender loving care).
• Need to set up location category pages for the Rivet Name Study, specifically: France; United States (Louisiana, Texas, Michigan, Mississippi); England; Australia; Canada (Quebec, Nova Scotia, Ontario)
• Add the appropriate name study location categories to profiles.
• Select a source or repository of your choice, and document all Rivet*s by editing existing profiles or creating those that don't yet exist. Enter the name of the source or repository that you documented, and the date you started/completed the work, on the Rivet Sources and Repositories page.

Related Surnames and Surname Variants

The primary name variations are:

• Rivet - mostly France, Canada, United States
• Rivett - mostly England, some United States. See the SurnameDB's discussion about Rivett for information about name origin.
• Rivette - mostly United States, France
• Rivest - early Acadian, possibly France?

There are many other spellings found in records, most of which switch or replace the "i" or "e" with other vowels, or replace the "v" with "b". Some examples are Revet, Revit, Rivit, Ribit, Rabit, Rivetti, Revette, Revete, etc. None of these variants are included in this study per se, unless found as alternate spellings for Rivet, Rivett, or Rivette.
