Origin of Names

Roberson

First recorded in Scotland in the mid 15th Century, is a patronymic form of the male given name Rober, itself coming from Robert with the loss of the final "t". The ultimate origin of the name is the old German Hrodbert, a compound of the elements "hrod", renown and "berht", bright or famous, through the old French Rodbert. It was introduced into England by the Normans, and the forms Rodbertus, Rotbert and Robert are recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086...

Robertson This distinguished surname, with more than forty entries in the "Dictionary of National Biography" and having no less than twenty-five Coats of Arms, is today regarded as Scottish in origin, but is probably English. It is a patronymic form of the male given name Rodbert or Robert, from the pre 7th century German name "Hrodebert". This was a compound of the elements "hrod", meaning renown and "berht", bright or famous. As Robert it was introduced by the Norman-French to both England and Scotland, prior to the famous Conquest of 1066, and replaced the pre-existing Anglo-Saxon name "Hreodbeorht", which had the literal translation, but probably not the meaning of 'bright rod'. The patronymic form of the surname is spelt variously as Robertson, Roberts, Robarts and Robeson...

Roberson Brick Walls

Use this area to list your brick wall profiles, followed by brief explanation.

  • John Roberson - searching for parents. It's possible they were residing in South Carolina when John was born. Names may be John and Mary Moore Roberson.
  • Maggie Robinson - searching for parents and for her marriage record. Family lore has it that she was adopted. Her unmarried sister appears to have the surname Robinson on the 1900 and 1910 census. However, I do not know if she is an adopted sister or a biological sister. Others have parents for her in their trees, but I do not believe that they are correct. I can explain further if anyone wants me to. I don't know the text limit here. :)

Would this study also include the surname Robinson?

My brickwall matrilineal 2nd great-grandmother was allegedly adopted. I have seen Robertson, Robeson or Roberson, Robinson, and even Frazier listed as her maiden name.

She is said to have been born in Gaston, Sumter, Alabama.

Thank you. Have a blessed day.

You can definitely include her here. A large branch of my Roberson clan goes by Robinson today. Mine was also misspelled many times.

Thank you, Jen. I have added the category tag to her profile.

In the text above, there is a section that says, "Use this area to list your brick wall profiles, followed by brief explanation." But, it isn't a link. Where do I list and explain my brick wall profile?

Thanks again. Have a blessed day. :)

Sorry for the late reply. You need to click the edit button and edit that section, just as you would for your own profiles. I added my own brick wall profile as an example. If you have any further questions, please let me know.  :)

Ok, thank you. I understand now, I think. haha Have a blessed evening. :)
I added Roberson-2169 to the name study. I am trying to connect these Robersons in my lineage to the emmigrants of the Roberson clan in Scotland in the early 1800's. The original Roberson seems to be descended from the Gunn clan near Caithness, Scotland. The Gunn clan claimed to have ancient Nordic origins.
