On a seal of pebble, brought by him from the loved land of his fathers, transparent as glass, was engraved his family device, viz: a dove and a serpent, the symbols of innocence and wisdom, with the motto — 'Virtutis Gloria Merces.' (Glory is the Reward of Valour). Wyndham Robertson

Biographical Note
Wyndham Robertson (1803-1888) was the 20th governor of Virginia. He traced his family heritage to Pocahontas and authored historical texts. This collection contains family letters business papers, family records, historical research, dating back to 1740, and letters to civil war officials. Wyndham Robertson actively corresponded with southern generals during the civil war.
The scope of this research is restrained to (Box 1, folders 1- 6) the family papers written before 1811 and consist mainly of the correspondence of Wyndham Robertson's father, William "Billy" Robertson, and Wyndham's grandfather, Archibald Robertson, a factor on the James River, to his family in Glasgow. Family affairs were the main subject of the correspondence.
Wyndham Robertson's father, William "Billy" Robertson, carried on a lively correspondence with his uncle, Arthur Robertson, Chamberlain of Glasgow, and his cousins in Scotland which verifies the authenticity of Mary Robertson's Robertson Family Narrative
