Rockford Female Seminary

Rockford Female Seminary was founded in 1847.

History

In 1846 a group of Congregationalists led by by Rev. Aratus Kent founded Beloit College for men. In 1847 the same group established Rockford Seminary as a sister college for women.

Rockford Female Seminary was chartered on February 25, 1847. It’s charter stated that the purpose of the institution would be to “afford instruction in the liberal arts and sciences adapted to the highest order of female education."

It opened June 11, 1849 with 53 students.

Sarah Tuthill was its first matron. She worked there from 1849 until 1852 when she married James Cook.
