Goals

This is a One Name Study (ONS) project to collect together in one place everything about the surname Rodger and its variants. The hope is that, like you, other researchers will join our research to help make it a valuable reference point for people studying lines that cross or intersect.

Variants

There are many spellings and variant forms of the Rodger surname, including:

  • (Fb) indicates links to the Forebears (forebears.io) web site.
  • (NN) indicates links to the Nordic Names (www.nordicnames.de) web site.
  • (SDB) indicates links to the SurnameDB (www.surnamedb.com) web site.

This list is not exhaustive.

Motto

The Roger motto is "Nos Nostraque Deo" which translates as "We and Ours to God".

The motto was originally a war cry or slogan.

Mottoes first began to be shown on armorial bearings (coats of arms) in the 14th and 15th centuries, but they did not come into general use until the 17th century. Thus, the oldest coats of arms generally do not include a motto.

Mottoes seldom form part of the grant of arms. Under most heraldic authorities, a motto is an optional component of the armorial bearings, and can be added to or changed at will. Many families have chosen not to display a motto on their coats of arms.

I have included a VARIANTS section containing over 100 example surnames.

Is it possible to add more than three name tags to this ONS? If so, how?

Thanks

Hi! I added text to the companion category for your name study (Category:Rodger Name Study). Feel free to edit it. The default for the template is to add the main category, but you can add a line to have a different category. See the ONS template page for details. Give me a holler if you have any questions about categorization.

I also created a redirect, so Project:Rodger (the link for the button from the Rodger surname page) brings you to this page.

Cheers, Liz
