This page is dedicated to honoring the Japanese-American men who were interned or had family interned at the Rohwer Relocation Center in Arkansas during World War II, but chose to serve in the United States Armed Forces. Despite the unjust treatment they and their families had faced, these men demonstrated their loyalty and patriotism by enlisting in the military and fighting for their country. The page will feature a comprehensive list of 866 men who served, as a tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of these Japanese-American veterans, and a reminder of the resilience and strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
Killed In Action
- Joe M Nishimoto (1919-1944) born on February 21, 1919 in California. He enlisted in the United States Army on October 1943 and assigned to the 100th Infantry Battalion. Private First Class Joe M. Nishimoto was killed on November 15, 1944 near La Houssiere, France. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during World War II. He was a Nisei, which means that he was a second generation Japanese-American.
- Akira Richard Otsubo was born on July 29, 1919 in California. He enlisted in the United States Army, 442nd Infantry, 3rd Battalion, Company L. He was killed on November 23, 1944 in Germany.

- Takeo Kaneichi was born on March 2, 1919 in Kerman, California. He was drafted into the Army onf November 12, 1941 and in 1942 his family was incarcerated at the Jerome Relocation Center in Arkansas. In the Army he received Medical Training and was assigned to the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. While fighting in the Vosges forest in eastern France he was seriosly wounded and later died of his wounds on November 8, 1944.

- Cooper T. Tahara was born on November 8, 1919 in Florin, California. He was drafted in the Army on October 20, 1941. His family was incarcerated at the Rohwer War Relocation Center (WRA) in Arkansas. They were later relocated to the Jerome WRA. Cooper was assigned to the 442nd Regimental Combat Team (RCT), 3rd Battalion, I Company. On November 5, 1944, he was kille by sniper fire during his attempt to take the ridge held by Germans near Biffontaine, France. He was interred at the American Military Cemetery in Epinal, France. For his military actions he was awarded the Bronze Star.
- George S. Nakamura was born on May 11, 1919 in Sacramento County, California. He was one of the first Nisei young men to enlist in the Army from Lodi High School. Assigned to the 442nd Regimental Combat Team (RCT). He was killed in action on October 29, 1944 in the Vosges Mountains of France, while trying to rescue the "Lost Battalion". He is buried at the Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno, San Mateo County, California.
- Ko Tanaka from Lodi, California, he volunteered and enlist in the Army while assigned at the Rohwer internment camp. He was assigned to the 442nd Regimental Combat Team (RCT), Company K. He was killed in action on October 29, 1944 in the Vosges Mountains of France, while trying to rescue the "Lost Battalion". He is buried at the Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno, San Mateo County, California.

- George Omokawa was born on January 10, 1916 in San Pedro, California. He enlisted in the 442nd Infantry Regimental Combat Team (RCT), 3rd Battalion. He was killed in action on October 30, 1944 in the Vosges Mountains of France, while trying to rescue the "Lost Battalion".

- Minoru M. Yoshida was born on December 16, 1918 in San Francisco, San Francisco County, California. He enlisted in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team (RCT), 2nd Battalion, E Company. He was killed in action on October 31, 1944 in Epinal, France, while attached to the 36th Infantry Division. His patrol was subjected to a suprise enemy attack, Private First Class Yoshida crawled under file to a position from which he could engage the enemy wiht a BAR. Disregarding enemy fire direct upon him, he neutralized par of the enemy fire but simultaneously drew fire from other enemy positions and was fatally wounded. His actions enabled his patrol to secure cover and to a place of cover. He was awared the Silver Start for his actions.
- Kiyoshi "Kay" Masaoka was born in Placer County, California around 1917 and lived in Lodi, California. He was employed as an automobile serviceman before he enlisted in the army on December 1, 1941, six days before the attack on Pearl Harbor. His sister-in-law Chiyoko Masaoka was interned at Rohwer Relocation Center in Arkansas. He was assigned to the 442nd Regimental Combat Team (RCT). He was wounded at Bruyeres, France while his unit was rescuing the "Lost Battalion" and died from his wounds on November 6, 1944.

- Robert "Bob" T. Kameoka was born on June 15, 1909 in Honolulu County, Hawaii. He was interned at the Jerome Rolocation Center in Arkansas when he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was assigned to the 442nd Regimental Combat Team (RCT). He was killed in action on October 20, 1944 at the Battle of Bruyeres, France as his unit was trying to rescue the "Lost Battalion". He is buried in Epinal, France.
- Seichie Nakamoto Sergeant Nakamoto was from Fresno, California. He enlisted in the Army and was assigned to the 442nd Regimental Combat Team (RCT), 2nd Battalion, G Company. He as killed on October 14, 1944 at the Battle of Bruyeres, France as his unit was trying to rescue the "Lost Battalion".
- Yoshinoria Sakai was born in Sacramento, California around 1914. He enlisted in the Army and was assigned to the 100th Battalion, C Company. The unit was a reserve unit and attached to the 442nd Regimental Combat Team (RCT). Coporal Sakai was killed in action on October 15, 1944 in Battle of Bruyeres, France while his unit was attempting to rescue the "Lost Battalion." He is buried at the Sacramento Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Sacramento, Sacramento County, California.

- Ted "Tak" Takayuki Tanouye (1919-1944) was born on November 14, 1919 in Torrance, California. His family was sent to the Jerome War Relocation Center (WRC) and later transferred to the Rohwer internment camp. Tanouye was never sent there having enlisted in the Army on February 20, 1942. He was assigned to the 442nd Regimental Combat Team (RCT), 3 Battalion, K Company. He had returned to the front lines from a previous injury he had received in battle, when he was wounded on September 1, 1944 by an exploding land mine near San Mauro Cilento, Italy. He died five days later on September 6, 1944. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions on July 7, 1944 where he repeately attacked German forces, advancing ahead of his unit, alone. Despite having been wounded by a grenade blast he continued to fight until his unit over took the German position at the crest of "Hill 140".

- Akira Roy Shimatsu was born on November 1, 1919 in Fresno, California. He enlisted in the Army on October 15, 1941 and his family was interned at the Rohwer Relocation Camp. He was assigned to the 442nd Regimental Combat Team (RCT), Battalion 3, 3rd Headquarters. He volunteered as a litter bearer to help evacuate the wounded. On July 16, 1944 near Luciana, Italy he was killed in action when an artillery tree burst during heavy artillery barrage.
- Dick Zenichie Masuda was born on April 24, 1918 in Stockton, California. He enlisted in the Army and was assigned to the 442nd Regimental Combat Team (RCT), 2nd Battalion, F Company. He was killed in action on June 26, 1944 at Rome-Arno, Italy. He was buried at Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno, San Mateo county, California.

- Calvin Tomio Saito was born on August 9, 1923 in Los Angeles California. He was sent to the Granada WRA Relocation Center and enlisted in the Army on April 6, 1943. He was assigned to the 442nd Regimental Combat Team (RCT), 3rd Battalion, K Company. During fighing with Germans near Castellina Marittima, Italy, he was killed in action on July 5, 1944 as he and four of his comrades seized Hill 140, known as "Little Cassino". He is brother to George Saito who also served and died in the war.

- George Seigo Saito was born on July 6, 1918 in Los Angeles, California. He was sent to the Granda Reloaction Center and from there he enlisted in the Army on June 11, 1943. He was assigned to the 442nd Regimental Combat Team (RCT), 2nd Battalion, H Company. He was killed in action on October 15, 1944 at the Battle of Bruyeres, Italy as he was taking Hill B, from fragements of an artillery shell. He was the older brother of Calvin Tomio Saito who was also killed in Italy af few months before.
- Masuto Sakado served in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team (RCT), 2nd Battalion, G Company. He was killed in action fighting Germans in France on August 19, 1944
- Togo S. Sugiyama was born on July 18, 1919 in Kent, Washington. He enlisted in the Army from the Rohwer Relocation Camp in Arkansas and was assigned to the 442nd, 2nd Battalion, H Company. He was attached to the 34th Infantry Division on July 12, 1944 near Pastina, Italy when he was killed in action. During the battle he killed five Germans and his personal bravery and devotion to duty during battle inspired his men to fight on in the battle. For his heroic actions during battle he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.

Housing Blocks
Groups of barracks used for housings were divided into blocks. Each block was about five hundred feet square area consisting of twelve barracks. Barracks were aligned six to a side with the mess hall and bathroom/laundry building in between them.
