Noel, I believe that Ronan was originally RONAIN, the act of Kingslaying, Irish Celtic.

Here is an excerpt Ronain Family History /Name Meaning Historically, surnames evolved as a way to sort people into groups - by occupation, place of origin, clan affiliation, patronage, parentage, adoption, and even physical characteristics (like red hair). Many of the modern surnames in the dictionary can be traced back to Britain and Ireland.

Similar surnames: Honan, Donais, Sonkin, Ronan, Monnin, Bonnin, Tonkin, Conkin, Onan

Cill Rónáin is the only official name. The anglicized spelling Kilronan has no official status.

PS My great grandfather was RONAYNE, same tribe or clan, just the annoying name variations. Please shout if you'd like more of the research. PPS I'm at a brick wall with him
