Index of Plantations

Introduction

Rosemont Plantation was started by the Cunningham family in Laurens County, South Carolina. Patrick Cunningham, a Loyalist, was banished from South Carolina, and later returned. Son Robert Cunningham continued the plantation after Patrick's death. His 1859 will divided the property among his wife, daughter Ann Pamela and son John. The plantation emphasized indigo production, shifting to cotton later in the nineteenth century. After the Civil War, the plantation operated primarily through tenancy as a cotton plantation. [1]

From the National Register of Historic Places: "During its occupation from ca. 1790 until 1930, Rosemont Plantation was owned by the Cunningham family. The plantation is often linked with Ann Pamela Cunningham, who formed the organization in 1854 to purchase George Washington's Mount Vernon Plantation for the nation."

Slaves

According to Robert Cunningham's 1859 will, his inventory included 155 slaves, 45 of whom were to go to his wife Louisa.[2]
