older ancestors

Research by the late Douglas Rossington and currently by Andrew Lancaster has traced the larger Rossington family back many generations as far as the sixteenth century and probably to Roston, Derbyshire. There are also perhaps more obvious connections in this family tree with the village of Rossington, near Doncaster, Yorkshire.

Many siblings or cousins were born around the same time and same area of Lincolnshire (ref, Andrew Lancaster's web site - [1]).

In the early 1800's, this branch of the Rossington family were based in the Boston area (Leasingham, Sleaford, Skirbeck, Spalding, Swineshead, Wash, etc. are only a few miles from Boston).

The family search tree (accessed 30-5-2022) shows Joseph's parents as John Rossington 1810-1887 [2] and Rhoda (Harness) Rossington b. 1804, m. Sleaford 14-05-1833, with children

John b.1837,
Elizabeth b.1838,
Joseph b.1840

In this record John's parents are shown as William and Mary Rossington and his birthplace as Carlton le Moorland However the birth date of 1810 seems to contradict some subsequent census records which have John's birth date closer to 1807 (note there is also a local birth record for John Rossington in 1807 in Swineshead with parents William and Mary Rossington [3]. However, contemporary census records often rounded ages by as much as five years so there is not necessarily a contradiction here.

A subsequent census records 1841 for Skirbeck shows John Rossington 30 b.1811 with Rhoda 35 b.1806, Elizabeth 3 b.1838 and Joseph 2 b.1839 [4] note - this seems a key record for link re. Josephs's ancestry.

The 1851 census for Swineshead records the family with John 44 b.1807 Swineshead (toll collector) , Rhoda 47 b. Leasingham, Elizabeth 13 b. Wash , Joseph 11 b. Skirbeck, Eliza 5 b. Skirbeck [5]

However, there is still a slight doubt regarding which William and Mary Rossington were the parents of John b.1807-11 and grandparents of Joseph b.1840.

On family search, Joseph's paternal grandparents are shown as William Rossington 1775 -1856 [6] and Mary Woolfitt 1773-1845 [7] who married in Welbourn, Lincolnshire on 30-01-1800 [8]. Their Children were -

Elisabeth 1801-1842 likely b. Swineshead 1804 [9]
Sarah 1802-1875, possibly 1805 but different mother [10]
Mary b.1803 [11]
Frances b.1805 [12]
William 1807-1882 [13]
John 1807 or 1810-1887 [14]
Richard b.1813 [15]

(Note - there is also a local Lincolnshire record for a William Rossington born 1774 with parents Richard Rossington and Mary [16]).

This tree shows William Rossington 1775-1856 as having parents John Beckett 1746-1830 and Elizabeth Rossington 1750-1825, who married on 14-05-1778 in Wellingore . This might explain why William doesn't have the surname Beckitt like his younger siblings -

It is also possible that Joseph's great great grandfather was Richard Rossington 1741-1799 and his great grandfather was William Rossington b. 1764 [99], etc. (but this needs further investigation).

In the nineteenth century, there are other contemporary Joseph Rossingtons records in families of agricultural labourers, etc. who are probably related.
