At the end of July 1880, Capt. John Edgar, his wife and (then) five children boarded the Roxburgh Castle bound for New York via Dundee. The town of South Shields, England and the Durham Rifle Volunteers had presented him with gifts and had held a public farewell dinner. The family's ultimate destination was Texas.
