Royal Navy
The Royal Navy (RN) is the principal naval warfare force of the United Kingdom. The force traces its origin from the Royal English Navy and was amalgamated, with the Royal Scots Navy, at the Acts of the Union in 1707. Ships of the Royal English Navy retained title and seniority and, as such, the force is regarded, in the United Kingdom, as the oldest of the armed services and is known as the Senior Service. Vessels, and crew, of the Royal Scots Navy were transferred to the new Royal Navy although not all retained seniority.
