The use of the citation needed template is a better option than using <ref> tags. Using reference tags creates the appearance that the item within the bio is sourced when it is not. A discussion on this topic can be found here: Citation Needed template versus using reference links.

The overwhelming consensus of G2G participants in the thread above shows that most Wikitree users are in favor of using the citation needed template. A separate G2G thread was opened to request that the template be added to the approved list. A poll will be opened on that thread and readers will be encouraged to "vote" their support or disapproval of the request by means of up votes on a series of answers to the question.

The citation needed template best fits into the Formatting Templates category. Currently, the other approved formatting templates are image template, and 5 color templates: blue, green, gray, red, and yellow. The definition of a formatting template is:

These are for formatting text inside a profile or otherwise changing the display.

Indeed, the citation needed template formats text by super-scripting the "citation needed" text and by changing its color to green and underlining it. Additionally, the text is hyper-linked to the Wikitree Help:Sources reference page.
