Letter sent to Gary Miller's mother, Ruth Miller, during WWII

Essern 12. 1. 1943

Liebe Ruth,

Wir haben nun schon wieder solange von einander nichts gehört, habe mich gefreut damals wieder von Euch zu hören und hoffte in Verbindung zu bleiben, leider blieb alles still. Seit dem meine Enkelin in {Englnch}? einen Brief geschrieben hat, habe ich nichts mehr gehört und das ist schon lange her, immer wenn sie kam, frug sie mich, ob ich Post bekommen habe, doch leider.

Wie Du siehst, liebes Ruthchen, bin ich immer noch da, habe ein schönes Alter erreicht, werde dreien Monat 85 Jahre, bin inzwischen auch krank gewesen, zweimal im Krankenhaus gelandet, doch geht es wieder, und solange man noch jeden Morgen aufstehen und so bischen rumschaffen kann, ist man zufrieden, und ich danke Gott dafür. Nun möchte ich auch gerne mal was von Euch hören, damals hatte ich Hoffnung es kommt uns jemand besuchen und nun hört man nichts mehr. Wie hätte ich mich gefreut. Will hoffen, das Ihr alle gesund seid und gut ins neue Jahr gekommen seid, was bei uns auch der Fall war. Bei uns ist das Wetter mehr Österlich als Weihnachtlich, haben noch keinen Schnee gehabt und wenig Frost.

Nun hoffe ich, das Dich dieser Brief erreicht und wir noch in Verbindung kommen, wer weiß wielange? Es grüßt Dich, Deine Kinder und Bruder, Deine Tante Agnes und Kinder mit Familie. Onkel Gustav läßt auch schön grüßen.

Essern January 12, 1943

Dear Ruth,

We haven't heard from each other for a long time, I was happy to hear from you again and hoped to stay in touch, unfortunately everything stayed quiet. Since my granddaughter in {Englnch}? wrote a letter, I haven't heard anything and that was a long time ago, whenever she came she asked me if I had received mail, but unfortunately.

As you can see, dear Ruthchen, I'm still here, I've reached a good age, I'll be 85 in three months, I've also been ill in the meantime, ended up in the hospital twice, but it's fine again, and as long as one get up every morning, get some things done and can get around a little bit, one is satisfied; and I thank God for that. Now I would also like to hear something from you, at the time I was hoping someone would come visit us and now we hear nothing more. How happy I would have been. I hope you are all healthy and had a good start into the new year, which was the case for us. Here the weather is more like Easter than Christmas, we haven't had any snow and little frost.

Now I hope that this letter reaches you and that we can still get in touch, who knows how long there is time? Greetings to you, your children and brother, your aunt Agnes and children with family. Uncle Gustav also sends his regards.

Note: There is one word still missing: {Englnch}, the place her granddaughter lives. The copy is not giving it up and it can not be extrapolated from context so far.

Essern, however, seems to be the little village now part of the parish of Diepenau north of Minden in Lower Saxony, Germany.
