The Ionic took on board here 208 tons coal, and sailed at 4.20. p.m, with 46 through passengers for New Zealand, two passengers from Hobart, and about 2,500 tons of cargo from London.^[2]

13th April 1891 (Wellington)

ARRIVAL OF THE R.M.S. IONIC.

The R.M.S. lonic, Captain Kidley, arrived at 6.30 this morning. She was to have left London on the 21st February, but was detained owing to dense fog. The following day the fog lifted, and a start was made, but by the time Gravesend was reached the fog had settled down thicker than ever. Moored ship at Gravesend, and remained there until 26th February. During all this time the traffic was entirely suspended on the river. As it cleared a little a start was made, and by the time Dover was reached the fog had entirely disappeared. Arrived at Plymouth at 3.24 pm on 27th February, and left again an hour later. Had fine weather to Teneriffe which was reached at 10.13 am on 4th March ; sailed same day at 6.43 pm ; picked up the NE trades in lat. 19dg N, and these lasted to lat. l0dg W ; encountered the SE trades in lat. 5dg S ; these blew with moderate strength, and gave out in lat. 26dg S. Reached Table Bay at 6.18 am on the 20th March, and left again at 1.40 pm same day ; fell in with a westerly wind shortly after leaving, which continued till long. 46dg E., the remainder of the run across the southern ocean had variable winds and light airs, and arrived at Hobart at 2 am on the 8th April; sailed at 4.80 pm same day, and arrived as above.

On 1st March Joseph Devine, the infant son of a third-class passenger, died of bronchitis.

Captain Kidley is still in command. Mr Tommis is now fourth officer, in place of Mr Hayes, transferred to the Teutonic.
