History
Morgan Land cemetery was one of the first cemeteries in Clearfield County, founded in 1820. It was the first Catholic church and cemetery in Clearfield county founded in approximately 1845 when the St. Aloysius Church was constructed.
The ground for the cemetery was loaned from the date of establishment in 1820 up until 1852, when Edward and Elizabeth Gilligan donated (sold for $1) four acres of their farm to Bishop O'Connor of the Erie Diocese.[1]
It ceased to be a active cemetery in 1960. It fell into disrepair and was overgrown, and many of the tombstones were stolen. In the 60's one man took it upon himself to cut the cemetery out of the woods and bring it back from oblivion.
The cemetery measures 350 by 450 feet.[1] [2]
The existing sign for the Saint Aloysius Cemetery Sign was donated by Pepsi-Cola and Coca-Cola companies of Altoona and erected by William E. Shoff of Glen Hope in 1960.[2]
Who is buried here
Since the records for the church and cemetery have been lost, it is the goal of this project to research and find out who is buried there from other sources. There are a few legible headstones. Other sources, such as family histories and genealogies, obituaries, and newspaper stories will be used to identify those who are buried there. There is a one page list of names with information from the headstones at the Coalport Area Coal Museum, Coalport, Pennsylvania entitled "St. Aloysius Cemetery, Morganland, Pennsylvania." [3]
The oldest grave that has been discovered had the name "Mary Cuppels--Died 1824." In 1960, the last known interment was dated 1930.[1]
According to one source, the first person buried in the St. Aloysius Catholic cemetery was John Smith, who died in 1856.[4]
"It is said that the snow was drifted so deep that they drove over tops of apple trees in getting to the cemetery."[4]
In 1958, 150 grave stones could be located. Many of them were sunken into the ground up to 18 inches.[1]
