The Salem Baptist Church was established in 1809 by Cantrel Bethel. The first church building was a 25' X 30' log structure which housed it's thirty-one members.

It had it's own cemetery on two acres of land donated by James Lamberson in 1809. [1].

A fire badly damaged the church in 1880.[1], they Baptists also built a new building for their worship services. For many years, they only held sermons every othe rSunday, as they shared their preacher with another church. Sunday school however, was a weekly event and members talked often about the social issues such as drinking and card-laying[1].

By the 1920's the Sunday School was often held under the shade trees in the cemetery, and in 1927 a new church(the one that stands there today) was built to accomodate the growing congretations.[1]
