The Clipper Ship Samuel Plimsoll built 1873
This fast Clipper ship was named for the English politician and social reformer Samuel Plimsoll. He is now best remembered for having devised the Plimsoll line, the line on a ship's hull indicating the maximum safe draft, and therefore the minimum freeboard for the vessel in various operating conditions.
Built in 1873 at Aberdeen in Scotland by W.Hood & Co. She was listed as weighing between 1444 tons and 1459 tons on her yearly voyages to the Australiasian colonies either carrying immigrants or cargoes between 1873 and 1902.
Not to forget she would have made just as many voyages in the opposite direction from Australasian ports and Great Britain.
- from the WikiPedia listing for Samuel Plimsoll we find:
In 1873, the Samuel Plimsoll, an iron hulled full-rigged merchant sailing ship, was launched at the shipyard of Walter Hood & Co. in Aberdeen, Scotland for the Aberdeen White Star Line (G. Thompson & Co.). She was assigned the official British Reg. No. 65097 and the signal MKDH. In 1899, she caught fire in the Thames River and had to be scuttled, but was refloated and repaired in 1900. In 1902, she was severely dismasted and damaged on voyage to Port Chalmers, Australia. Towed to Sydney and subsequently to Fremantle, she was reduced to hulk status the following year. WikiPedia

From the European Mail we learn that Mr Samuel Plimsoll, M.P. for Derby, had been to Aberdeen at the launch of a vessel bearing his name. The Samuel Plimsoll, built by Messrs. Walter Hood and Co., is a beautiful iron vessel of 1510 tons register. Her dlmensions are—length of keel, 240ft ; breadth of beam, 39ft ; depth of hold, 23ft 3in ; class, 100A at Lloyd's. She will be under the command of Captain Boaden, formerly of the Star of Peace. The ship is owned by Messrs. George Thomson jun., and Co., and is intended to be an addition to their splendid line of Australian clippers. Great interest was taken in the launch, a large number or people being present. The vessel was christened by the wife of the captain. After the ceremony a select company assembled, Mr George Thomson, of Messrs. George Thomson and Co., ex-M.P, for the city of Aberdeen, presid- ing. Mr Thomson, in proposing the health of Mr Plimsoll, thanked him in the name of the builders for his presence on the occasion, and hoped that their success in launching the vessel might prove an indication of Mr Plimsoll's success in the very important mission in which he was engaged. at: TROVE

BLOWN OUT TO. SEA.
SHIP SAMUEL PLIMSOLL DISABLED
TOWED INTO PORT.
AUCKLAND (N.Z.), Wednesday Afternoon. - The large vessel which was sighted yesterday morning. ten miles north of North Gisborne, at Poverty Bay, on the east coast of North Island, with only one mast standing, proved to be the ship Samuel Plimsoll. The disabled, vessel has been towed into Gisborne by a vessel which went to her assistance.
Tlie ship was bound from Glasgow to Dunedin. After passing Nuggets Point, Otago, the vessel being then 91 days out, she was blown out to sea during the storms which have recently prevailed anound the coast. When hove-to she began to roll heavily. The main and mizzen masts went' by the board, and the fallen debris was only cut away with difficulty.
A very anxious fortnight followed the vessel being blown to the north. The men were kept frequently at the pumps, and there is still 11in. of water in the main hold. The foremast is very shaky, but it carried sufficient sail to allow the captain to again make the coast -with a favour able wind.
The Samuel Plimsoll is a vessel of 1459 tons, and left Glasgow for N.Z. on June 18. She is a very well-known trader. TROVE
