Call for volunteers to test the new Wikitree X-friends app by entering profiles in the Corato one-place study

2023 Connect-a-thon

Entering profiles in the Corato one-place study

The object of the proposed experiment during the 2023 Connect-a-thon is to see whether Greg Clarke’s new X-friends app is capable of identifying all the carriers of the X-chromosome starting from a ‘root person’, going upwards to all that person’s ‘terminal ancestors’ and then, without any further manipulation, going downwards to all the potential carriers of the X-chromosome (‘X-friends’), without missing a single one.

The Excel file X-Friends-Savinella De-Robertis-1660231143198 copie 3 contains the names of 160 people whose profiles need to be added to Wikitree in order to test Greg’s new X-friends application. This Excel file is converted from from a .csv file created by the X-friends app. It will be sent to all volunteers.

These 160 people are included in the Wikitree ‘Corato One-place study’, which has been created from the albero genealogico coratino on Ancestry, which in turn is the family tree focusing on mainly coratini families as part of a project entitled ‘A tale of two twinned cities : Corato and Grenoble’. This project aims to promote the writing of the history of emigration from Corato (to all destinations, USA included) and is managed by the French association (charity), Atelier Généalogique.

For the 2023 Wikitree Connect-a-thon, volunteers are asked to enter the profiles of potential carriers of the X-chromosome inherited by Savinella de Robertis from her ‘terminal ancestors’ numbered A1 to A11 in the Excel file entitled X-Friends-Savinella De-Robertis-1660231143198 copie 3.

If you wish to volunteer, you should also refer to the ‘Ancestors and descendants of Savinella De Robertis copie 2’ tree (496 people) here : https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/tree/186755320/recent .

You will not be asked to enter any profiles other than those of the people in the Excel file. As the ‘one-place study coordinator’, I will be entering a further 70 people : the spouses who are not Savinella’s X-friends and who are not included in the above-mentioned Excel file.

It should be remembered that the X chromosome has a particular transmission pattern : from father to daughters only, and from mothers to all her children. As an example, if we consider only the trajectory of the X on her paternal side, starting from Savinella herself, she will have inherited the X-chromosome from the following people (in red in the Excel file), who originated from the neighbouring coastal town of Molfetta :

- Francesco de Robertis 1864 (who probably died in Corato, land inheritance passing through the maternal line) - Rosa Cusanno 1870 (Savinella’s maternal line originated from Corato, to be considered separately) - Rosa Sinigaglia 1838 (Francesco’s mother) - Paolo Sinigaglia 1817 (Rosa Sinigaglia’s father) - Sabina Nirchio 1821 (Paolo’s wife) - Elisabetta Rosa Solimini 1794 (Paolo’s mother) - Lorenzo Solimini 1764 (Elisabetta’s father, A1 terminal ancestor) - Antonia Paolonecchia 1764 (Elisabetta’s mother, A2 terminal ancestor) - Pasquale Nirchio 1791 (Sabina Nirchio’s’s father) - Annantonia Pansini 1793 (Sabina’s mother) - Sabina La Rocca 1762 (Pasquale’s mother, A3 terminal ancestor) - Domenico Pansini 1774 (Annantonia’s father) - Antonia Silvestri 1752 (Domenico’s mother, A4 terminal ancestor) - Maria Buonocuore 1775 (Annantonia’s mother, A5 terminal ancestor)

Following on from this upwards trajectory, the X-chromosome downwards trajectory on Savinella’s paternal side, inherited from Sabina Nirchio (Paolo Sinigaglia’s wife, in green) was : - Pasquale Sinigaglia 1842 - Nicolo Sinigaglia 1852 - Lorenzo Sinigaglia 1855

Of course, there may have been other children of Paolo Sinigaglia and Sabina Nirchio, but these are the only ones included in the family tree and Excel file mentioned above. Following on from these three males, the idea is to see if they passed on the X to any female children...and so on. As for Rosa Sinigaglia 1838 (who was identified as a carrier of the X-chromosome we are interested in as part of the upwards trajectory), did she have any other children (apart from Francesco de Robertis 1864) who would have inherited the X from her ? This is where it is necessary to consult both the family tree and the Excel file.

There should not be any potential X-chromosome carriers who are recorded in the family tree, but not in the Excel file : if this is verified to be the case, the X-friends app is working correctly.

References and sourcing proposal for the Savinella de Robertis X-lineage on Wikitree

The sourcing process will be demonstrated to each volunteer individually. It will require copying the reference of records from a Google Drive database (database dell’Atelier Généalogique dello stato civile italiano) : https://drive.google.com/drive/u/0/folders/1ugi7rkFFZofq1eI7b882a1j4TTxkv1-2 There is always at least one referenced record in the database, giving an exact date for birth, marriage or death. As coordinator of the Corato One-place study, I propose to coordinate the work of any volunteers who opt to participate.

If you would like to volunteer to enter profiles, this is what you need to do : - please join Team Italy and register for the 2023 Connect-a-thon. - If you don’t already have a Google account, please obtain one : access to a database on Google Drive requires a gmail address.

Using the Google Drive database References in the database on Google Drive follow a particular pattern (to be reproduced for each profile on Wikitree) : N= birth, M=marriage, PubMar=marriage bann, D=death, atto=n° of act, vue = image number . Having consulted the family tree and the Excel file mentioned above, you will know that Savinella’s exact date of birth is known . So, by searching in the Google Drive database for ‘N-1907-Savinella de Robertis’ (the name must be correctly spelt), you will come to this authentic record immediately : https://drive.google.com/drive/u/0/search?q=N-1907-Savinella%20de%20Robertis

By clicking on the record (which will be on one, two or three pages), you will come to a photo in high definition, which you can enlarge. By hovering the cursor over the top of the image, you will see the image’s reference. By clicking on the latter – for instance, ‘N-1907-Savinella de Robertis-Corato-atto 389-vue 2950:3317’ – a window will be opened from which the reference can be copied directly to the Wikitree profile.

New Wikitree procedure for entering profiles The procedure for entering profiles basically follows that proposed according to the new system described here : https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/1508993/have-you-tried-the-new-system-for-creating-profiles

Please note : married names of females are not entered in the Wikitree profile of people in the Corato One-place study, since women in Italy keep their maiden names for official identification porposes. This is important, because it helps in the identification of people in the endogamous context of Corato.

In the ‘Biography’ section, you can enter the hour of birth, if you wish, or the approximate date of birth and death (mentioned in the family tree on Ancestry); also the names of the person’s parents, and any other information about the person’s life. For example : BiographyItalic text Savinella was born on at 12 o'clock on 3 Feb 1907 in Corato. She was the daughter of Francesco de Robertis and Rosa Cusanno.[1] She emigrated to the US in 1929.

Sources The record reference can be entered in the ‘Sources’ section on Wikitree, together with general information about the sources. Finally, there is a ‘Note’ section, mentioning ‘X-lineage for Savinella de Robertis” with a link to her profile, which is already connected to the Wikitree main tree : https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/De_Robertis-6 It is important not to forget this Note, as it will enable the researcher to identify the ‘root person’ of the X-lineage on Wikitree. From Familysearch (Trani Tribunale collection), a citation reference (bottom left hand corner) can also copied in the Wikitree profile, if you wish :

This can also be done with the Antenati records, which include the vast majority of records in the database. For example, by clicking on https://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.it/ark:/12657/an_ua264180/0AEA6z7 you will come to the page on which you will find the 1838 Molfetta birth record of Rosa Sinigaglia at the time of writing (January 2023). However, this link may not be permanent; and Antenati.it (the Italian State civil records web-site) provides no method for the record to be copied in high definition. The latter operation can be done, but it is a fairly time-consuming process and the Collect-a-thon does not allow for much time ! So it is recommended to make do with the Google Drive reference.

For each Wikitree profile, it is proposed to enter the general source information by copying what is inscribed here below (including the note) :

Sources

All Corato sources come either from Antenati (1809-1900) Napoleonic / Restoration / Civil State records or the FamilySearch Trani Tribunale collection (1901-1910). Further help with research in Corato can be obtained from our albero genealogico coratino, and from our database containing about 20,000 photos of authentic records. Full instructions for use of these resources can be found on this site.

N= birth, M=marriage, PubMar=marriage bann, D=death, atto=n° of act, vue = image number. Records before 1809 come mainly from marriage records 1835-65, which include death dates of father and grandfather if father of bride or groom is deceased. Baptism and marriage dates before 1809 come from Corato Church records.
