SCHÖNCHEN (Panino, Paninskaya), (Шенхен),
a German Roman Catholic colony, was established on the "Wiesenseite" or "meadow side" of the Volga River, on the Little Karaman River, on the 3rd of August 1767. The colony was founded by Baron Caneau de Beauregard. However the land there was not suitable for farming and in 1770 the colony was relocated to better land northeast of Katharinental, between the colonies of Zug and Wittmann.
