Alexander Gilmour was made Baronet (Nova Scotia) of Craigmillar when James I of England (and VI of Scotland) and Charles I gave out titles in exchange for monies to subsidise planting colonists in Nova Scotia to settle Canada, a 'Plantation'.

Alexander's grandson, the 3rd Baronet, Alexander Gilmour died unmarried without heir, and the Baronetcy became extinct.
