Colville Origins in Scotland
The name Colville is said to be of Norman origins. The first recorded Colville in Scotland was Phillip de Colville. He was a hostage sent for the release of William the Lion under the Treaty of Falaise. Phillip was also granted the baronies of Oxnam and Hecton in Roxburghshire as well as lands in Ayrshire.
Ochiltree
Ochiltree Castle was built by the Colvilles in the 12th century and destroyed in 1499 during a feud with the Douglases. In 1530, it was exchanged by Sir James Colville with Sir James Hamilton of Finnart for the barony of East Wemyss in Fife.
Colvilles of Culcross
Robert of Cleish’s barony had been rescinded from him in 1540 because of his father’s treason but was restored in 1543.

Argyll Colvilles
In the mid 17th century In the mid 1700s the Duke of Argyll decided to improve the farming. He invited a number of successful Ayreshire farmers to settle in Kintrye. Among them was William (Colville) of Lesnessock (abt.1600-1678) who acquired Lessnessock Between 23 July 1631 and 17 February 1644.

The family prospered and became quite large. They were among the prominent distillers during the heyday of the Campbeltown Distilleries.
The Colvilles in Argyll were mostly from Campbeltown with some in Killean and Kilchenzie.
