Wish 109

Joseph Nelson LaFave (abt.1845-abt.1909) - who were his parents?

ORIGINAL PARAGRAPH ONE of BIO:

Joseph was born about 1845. He married Jane (Paine) King on 30 May 1875 in Indian Lake, NY. They had several children. His parents are unknown at the time of this writing; however, family records list his mother's maiden name as MUIR. His birthplace was recorded as St. Antwen, Quebec (phonetically spelled, passed down verbally by his daughter); it is thought this may be St. Antoine, Quebec.

REPLACE THAT WITH THIS:

Joseph was born and baptized on 2 August 1843 in the parish of Saint-Philippe, Bas-Canada, now part of the province of Québec, Canada, located south of Montréal, north of New York state. His parents were Julien Lefebvre, cultivateur (farmer), and Elizabeth Muir. His godparents were Louis Gagné and Josephte Lanctot.[1]

The family records list his mother's maiden name as MUIR. His birthplace was recorded as St. Antwen, Quebec (phonetically spelled, passed down verbally by his daughter); it is thought this may be St. Antoine, Quebec. The baptismal record does confirm his mother's last name as Muir, but his birthplace was Saint-Philippe, in an area south of Montréal. However, his family moved from Saint-Philippe to Saint-Antoine-Abbé at some point in his childhood. His older brother, Napoléon, died at age 23 and was buried in Saint-Antoine-Abbé in 1861.

Joseph eventually moved to New York state.

At some point he anglicized his last name, likely because the spelling and pronunciation was too difficult to explain. On his baptismal record his last name was spelled in the conventional French manner: Lefebvre. It is also sometimes spelled without the "b" as Lefêvre (as it was on his parents wedding record, and the church records of their first daughter). It is often anglicized as LeFave or LaFave, in this case. Joseph had no official middle name listed on his baptismal record, so it is likely he adopted one as an adult. Nelson is a very rare name for a French Canadian, so it's likely this happened after he moved to the United States.

Joseph married Jane (Paine) King on 30 May 1875 in Indian Lake, NY. They had several children.
