- Was born to an impoverished family and through hard study became an attorney and eventually rose to become a Congressman representing New York before being elected as the Vice President

- For his assault on Kettle Hill in Cuba during the Spanish-American War, he was postumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 2001
- 27. William Howard Taft (1857 - 1930)

- Was a Yale professor and the only President who also served as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court; his Presidential term was characterized by conflict between liberal and conservative elements in the Republican party
- 28. Thomas Woodrow Wilson (1856 - 1924)

- Term as President: 1913 - 1921
- Was a lawyer and an academic. His administration was best known for leading America into World War I, for his activist foreign policy that was called "Wilsonianism," and as the leading architect for the League of Nations. He earned a PhD in Political Science from Johns Hopkins University.
- 29. Warren Gamaliel Harding (1865 - 1923)
- Birthplace: Blooming Grove, Ohio

- Term as President: 1921 - 1923
- Was the owner of The Marion Star, an Ohio newspaper. He lived most of his life in rural Ohio and after rising to the presidency he was considered one of the most popular presidents in American history. He died suddenly less than 2 years into his presidency. News of the Teapot Dome Scandal and his affair with Nan Britton came to light after his death greatly tarnishing his reputation and lowering his popularity.
- 30. John Calvin Coolidge Jr. (1872 - 1933)
- Birthplace: Plymouth Notch, Vermont
- Political Party: Republican
- Term as President: 1923 - 1929
- Was a lawyer who worked his way up Massachusetts politics and served as the Governor and later was elected as the Vice President. He succeeded to the presidency upon the death of Warren Harding and was reelected in 1924. He restored public confidence after the Harding scandals and left the presidency with a high approval rating.
- 31. Herbert Clark Hoover (1874 - 1964)

- Term as President: 1929-1933
- Was an engineer, businessman, and politician.
- He was president when the stock market crashed in 1929 ushering in the Great Depression. The Depression became the central issue of his presidency.
- He championed a number of policies and rejected the call for Federal intervention to end the Depression. He was soundly defeated by rival Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933.
- 32. Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1882 - 1945)

- Political Party: Democrat
- Term as President: 1933-1945; elected four times as President, a record that won't be repeated due to the 22nd amendment; died less than three months after his fourth term began
- Was one of the most important Presidents in U.S. history; presided over most of the Great Depression and World War II
- Before being elected President, served as New York State Senator, Assistant Secretary of the Navy, and Governor of New York
- A polio victim--and survivor--though many people didn't realize the extent of his disability at the time; founded the Warm Springs treatment center in Georgia
- As President, responsible for many progressive U.S. policies and institutions, both temporary and permanent, including New Deal programs of banking regulation, public works, the Civilian Conservation Corps, and the Social Security Act
- Oversaw entry of the U.S. into World War II, and preceding that, oversaw a military buildup that helped end the Great Depression by creating new jobs; oversaw development of the first nuclear bomb, although it was left to his successor, Harry Truman, to use it
