Introduction

This page documents the migration of James Edward Shaw and Mary Wood and family from Yorkshire to New Zealand. They settled in Kaiapoi, Canterbury.

Their marriage record shows up under "Greenfield, Oldham" in the Lancashire BMD, however I believe this is the same place as "Greenfield, Saddleworth, Yorkshire". Today it is part of Greater Manchester; at the time Saddleworth was divided between Lancashire and Yorkshire. (Or something).

That is all the entries for MMN=Wood, Sub-District=Uppermill. There are also other Saddleworth entries that at this stage look to be other families.

Shipping records

On the Ionic sailed 7 Sep 1911 from New Zealand to London:[7]

  • Ticket #440 Ida Shaw, domestic, unaccompanied female
  • Ticket #655:
    • Jas. Shaw, Farmer, married
    • Mm(?) Shaw, wife
    • Fred Shaw, son
    • Esther Shaw, daughter

Fred and Esther were originally on Ticket 440 but moved, it seems. All passengers bound for Wellington, New Zealand.

John emigrated around 1906 ; Arthur in 1913, and Harry in 1914, all on separate ships, details are on their specific profiles.

The Tainui (Harry's ship) also has a Charles Shaw , that could well be Charlie. The inbound log says "Mr C", a turner, but the outbound says Charles. [8]
